Professional accountancy today is all about compliance. Bookkeeping is so automated that it doesn't typically require deep expertise. But complying and more importantly demonstrating that you've complied with myriad government rules and regulations demands the skills that accountants have by the bushel load: an ability to manage a non-disruptive audit process, credibility borne of many decades of (usually) independence and objectivity, attention to detail and a certain nebbish je ne sais quoi that makes them less threatening than more bombastic types.

But there is no getting around it: as Accountants wax the nation's future wanes. They're a corpulent, overfed canary that can hardly fit on its perch in the coal mine. And their song has degenerated into one long, greasy belch.
