Cleary Act data refute Obama Campus rape epidemic

It was always a ridiculous claim on its face. But the President has gotten so used to a fawning press that he didn't see Wapo's sucker punch here.

Not true. The Clery data backs up the campus rape scenario. Colleges and universities do not properly report rape statistics. First they don't report all rapes reported to staff. Then they report rape as non-forcible when it is forcible and finally, they discourage students from reporting rapes so it doesn't adversely impact recruitment of the new freshman class. Many victims don't report their rapes so they never have a chance to make it into the Clery report.

If you read the Havard Crimson, you will find that it took a survey of graduating seniors regarding sexual assault. That data is likely more accurate than the Clery reports, although I've noticed some improvement in Clery reporting as of late.

  2. I think you're confusing two different comparisons. I was comparing Cleary data to the President's claim that 'one in five' had been sexually assaulted which the data clearly refutes. You are comparing the Cleary data to reported rape data. And there is no doubt that anonymous surveys will generate more accusations of crime than the criminal justice system. This, however doesn't prove that rape is 'underreported' it simply suggests that there is a difference between the two numbers that can be explained by undeerreporting, exaggeration, willingness to accuse anonymously but not in court, and a whole host of other factors. Anonymous surveys are lousy tools for public policy because no one is accountable for what they say. Make an accusation in open court and I'll take you seriously..
