Like instapundit.com says "it's Potemkin Villages all the way down".
The truth is that private corporate America is far more accountable and therefore behaves more ethically than either government or charities. It goes without saying that it's vastly more efficient.
This isn't because corporate managers are such swell guys , it's because they're in the only sector that gets serious outside scrutiny for both behavior and productivity. Seldom do governments and NFPs get scrutinized for behavior and they never have their productivity challenged the way that private companies experience every day.
This isn't always an issue of commitment or effort (although human nature tells us that we will shift time and effort to those things that we receive scrutiny for and away from those that we don't). It's just that in the Darwinian world of private industry only the best actors survive.
While in government and the NFP world zombie programs fill the streets, seeking human flesh to devour. Until someone mercifully blows their heads off.
