Our civilization is so amazing that people from Jane Austen's time would not, indeed could not comprehend it if you explained it to them

It has literally turned the assumptions about Rich and Poor upside down.  From Scott Sumners blog:

The grumpy old reactionary in me liked this Kevin Erdmann post:
Again, thinking of Jane Austen characters, or even of people in many pre-capitalist societies today, for peasants, human capital would be largely unattainable or pointless.  For the landed elite, it would be insulting.  Traders and commercial innovators – producers – became tolerable, and capitalism was the result.
Because of the capitalist revolution, not only is being personally productive tolerated today, but we would find it incomprehensible to imagine it another way.  In fact, we are concerned about it!  We say: It’s not fair that rich kids get the opportunity to be more productive!  Today, high income workers work longer hours than low income workers.  Imagine the look of confusion you might get from a pre-capitalist gentleman if you told him that in your society, the poor work fewer hours than the rich and the government is implementing school lunch programs to make sure poor kids don’t ingest too many calories.  He wouldn’t just have a hard time understanding how that could be.  Those words literally could not form that sentence.  You might as well speak martian to him.  Don’t even try to explain to him that you’re outraged by how the richest kids have an advantage in attaining productive employment.  He’ll think you’re crazy before you even get to that.

Texas Republicans to trim occupations requiring licensing - reducing barrier to more income equality

Licensing is the way that a guild keeps its numbers small and it's wages up. It contributes to income inequality when it does so.  Licensing when it has no value is just a barrier to the poor and the poorly endowed.  It's racist to boot.  Good for Greg Abbot, the presumptive Governor Elect for bringing more economic liberty to the Lone Star state.  Hattip Instapundit.com

AN INCOME-INEQUALITY REMEDY THAT WORKS: Texas Looks to Decrease Occupational Licensing. “Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott, who is running for governor of that state, has rolled out a plan that would repeal a number of occupational licensing rules. These standards restrict individuals from engaging in certain commerce without permission from the state (and often include paying extra money, taking tests, and meetinerty g other requirements).”

I've never seen the country so pessimistic - so I predict a turnaround in the next few years

The best time to buy is when stocks are down.  The best time to have faith in America is when it's in a funk and things are going badly as this poll indicates.  We forget that the US has more physical, intellectual, economic and spiritual assets than most of the rest of the world put together.  There is no nation more blessed nor more capable of reinvention and renewal.

We've had a few down years but don't mistake that for defeat.  We are special.

Rent seeking GOP style

Most of the Dems are hopeless statist centralizers who see nothing really wrong with helping their rent seeking friends.  About half the Republicans are - it's a massive supermajority for the Federal Stupor State to continue to shamble along.  Because if we broke it all up, these cats wouldn't be big wheels.  In the meantime we get crooked behavior like this:  HT Instapundit.coom

WHEN GOP LEGISLATORS USE STATE POWER TO PROTECT CRONIES: Three Congressmen Are Using Red Tape to Bind SpaceX to Earth. “Hey, remember Sen. Richard Shelby (R-Ala.), the guy who threw needless layers of bureaucracy at SpaceX because the private space company was doing its job of launching rockets into space a little too well? Well, it looks like he’s being joined by gentlemen from the other side of the Capitol: Three congressmen are trying to do the same thing. . . . Three House members—Mike Coffman (R-Colo.), Mo Brooks (R-Ala.), and Cory Gardner (R-Colo.)—have sent a memo to NASA demanding that the agency investigate what they call ‘an epidemic of anomalies’ with SpaceX missions. . . . I’ll note that Boeing (the major SLS contractor) has a big plant in Alabama, Brooks’ (and Shelby’s) home state, and United Launch Alliance has its HQ in Colorado, home to Gardner and Coffman (it’s even in Coffman’s district). This sounds more like they’re trying to protect their own turf more than honestly wanting transparency from SpaceX.”

Hillary crazy and Obama crazy are the same cray cray

Megan McCardle was bemoaning the fact that Obama beat Hillary - she thought Hillary would have been a little more rational when it came to working with the rest of the nation in crafting critical policy for that nation rather than jamming lefty 'love' down (or up, not sure which) every orifice without the benefit of lubrication.  And oddly enough she thought that might have helped the country.  Silly glasshoppah assume Hoo Hoo is just Bill Hoo with hoo haw but Hoo Hoo is very strange creature with very similar philosophy to Obama.  And sadly lady crazy and lefty crazy in the Democrat party are indistinguishable.  Indeed I would argue that the President's policy mix is totally tuned to lady crazy.  It certainly isn't helping African Americans in any way shape or form. They've suffered far more net loss than even the "Tea baggers" that the President is so contemptuous of.  The face of the new Democrat party built by BHO isn't Hillary it's her extra nutty rival: Elizabeth "Fauxcahontas" Warren.

And there is no cure for what ails her.

I've got to get focused and drink more

So I was fast asleep last night and dreaming of our Italian villa vacation - the last big one before my divorce. I dreamed that I went downstairs and my daughter Amelia was on the floor fixing something as I came down. I called to her "what's up Meems?" (that's what I call her, Meems - fathers have privileges and foremost among them is the right to give their kids ridiculous nicknames) and she looked at me very seriously and said: "so when are you going to spend time with me?". I was in the process of (defensively) replying when I was awakened by my smartphone who said: "Amelia Skittles Reeves has left you a message". Which was strange - not that Amelia's middle name was Skittles: I sweartogod it isn't and anyway it's not my fault - but that my phone talked to me. Because it never had before. Not so much as a "hi" (incidentally, is it appropriate to use "quotation marks" to quote a machine? The mind boggles).

So I groggily fumbled with my newly conversant phone - who oddly did not follow up her (it turns out my phone is a girl - who knew?) alert with even a regretful "sorry to wake you boss". Wincing as the phone's glare hurt my sleep laden eyes, I flipped over to my daughter's instant message account and it said: "miss you! hope to see you soon!" and not "I need money" or "why did you scare my last boyfriend away?" as one would have reasonably expected. So telepathy! Or perhaps providential fortuity or maybe quantum entanglement, I don't really know because I didn't pay any attention in Physics after I got into the college of my choice.

And for the record for all you tut tutting moms out there:  yes, I am going to spend time with my daughter and yes it will be quality time. As a matter of fact I've already bought tickets to take her to see her favorite band which I think she will consider to be much more quality time than I but it's still good Dad-age anyway.  And just because I did it before she sent her telepathic cri de coeur doesn't mean it doesn't count.

But the real question is how did I come by this rather cool clairvoyance?  The only thing I can think of is that for the first time in a long time I had a bourbon and water before I went to bed. And no Mom, that doesn't prove that I'm an alcoholic like Uncle George - he took a fifth to bed with him.  But I may be alcoholically tuned to vibrations in the space time continuum that would allow me to intuit future events while insensate (again why in the hell didn't I pay more attention in physics?) .  Anyway, I'm not taking any chances:  tonight I'm slamming a double and thinking really, really hard about those Powerball numbers. Smartphone chick don't fail me now!

Think this is weird?  Well here's a whole bunch of other non- political stuff that I've written. It works just like an Ambien prescription.

College activism: A Tinker bell Dumbledore smackdown in pursuit of...absolutely nothing

I don't know who is more deluded: the shrieking kids or their manipulative professorial elders. Read the whole thing.

Campus activism is, by and large, the world of make-believe.  Whenever students occupy a president’s office, Tinkerbell is not far away.  Whenever faculty demand a boycott, Professor Dumbledore winks at Professor Snape.

The premise behind campus activism is always the same.  The college campus is a microcosm of the larger world.  What happens in Vegas may stay in Vegas, but what happens at Oberlin or Sweet Briar is imagined to rock the foundations of the old order.  Patriarchy trembles.  The Zionist Entity is called to account.  The coal-breathing capitalist Earth warmers feel the chill of a generation walking on their graves.

So if all that happens to rapists on campus is they get expelled while rapists off campus get 20 to life why don't all the would be rapists enroll?

Unless Barack Obama is lying about campus sexual assault through his teeth. He wouldn't do that would he? Andrea Peyser on the feminist fraud of the (Obama hyped ) campus sexual assault epidemic.

What happens when the chief magistrate isn't interested in truth anymore? And the press is willing to lie for him? Does reality change or does our republic just die a little more?

So who is the government bribing to "snitch" on you: Amtrak employees bribed by DEA to provide Amtrak data

The Feds are a crime syndicate. A very stupid, expensive crime syndicate.

There are no liberal liberals

One of the more irritating lies that gets repeated over and over is how Liberals are 'open to change' and 'tolerant' and 'inclusive' while conservatives are hostile to change, intolerant and exclusive.  What a bunch of hooey.  Liberals and conservatives are exactly the same: tolerant of what they approve of, intolerant of that which they disapprove and willing to feign tolerance to get the things they approve of tolerated until they get enough power to make them mandatory.

The Federalist analyzes the gay marriage kerfuffle from it's beginnings in "all we are saying is give same sex marriage a chance' to it's current state 'if you don't approve of, subsidize and service same sex marriages then we will shut down your business and send you to jail".  He shows how it follows to the letter the smoking gambit.

There was another 'liberal reformer' from way back that did the same thing.  Indeed you can read about it in his best selling memoir.  Muhammad started his career in polyglot, pagan Mecca so the first half of the Koran is filled with paeans to tolerance, inclusiveness, kumbaya you name it.  Then Mr. Mo took the hejira to Medina where he got the keys to the city - literally and all of a sudden kumbaya Muhammad became I'll kill you bah! Muhammad.  He started out by exterminating an entire Jewish tribe that wouldn't convert.  Some things never change with these Muslims.

It turns out the politically religious whether they be Muslim, Moral Majority or garden variety liberal are all vicious intolerant persecutors of the other.  That's what "religion" does to you - it makes you cruel and then blinds you to the cruelty that you commit in the name of 'faith'.

Ain't the pagan god of pride grand?

Judenrein on the Clyde?

Charles Moore gives many examples of how hatefully racist global bien pensants have become but this one takes the cake:

Yvonne Ridley tweeting that an independent Scotland will be a “Zionist-free zone”

Were Twitter around in the thirties I can think of some other people with the same tweet. Of course they weren't socialists. They were national socialists.  But other than label, pray tell what's the difference?

High tech hooking: how the Internet is making it harder and harder to ban prostitution. Or to exploit whores.

Both the church ladies and the pimps fear legalization. The ladies due to moral panic and the fact that they would be terribly put out if they had to put out to keep their husbands on the reservation. The pimps are panicked because absent state prohibition there's no reason for them to exist.

Dealers thrive on underground markets. Above ground they turn into delivery boys. More at the economist link.

Paul Krugman disses libertarian politics over phosphorous? Really?

C'mon Pauley K. Is that the best you can do? That's like me dismissing your exhausted power mad leftism by pointing out that some programs experience corruption. It's a typical lefty tactic to demand their opponents be perfect while selling their own half baked irrational solutions as THE answer. Even as they circle the drain of failure.

C'min Pauley, try harder.

Let me say it as simply as I can: Transparency and the rule of law will be the touchstones of this presidency."—Barack Obama, 2009.

Har Har Har.

Imagine if this were your son lying dead on the street in front of your house

He was shot down by the police in broad daylight.  We don't know the details but there was no gun evident. It is hard to understand why the policemen felt the need to kill him.  This is a working class black community and they erupted with rage at what they saw happen on the street in front of them.  And can you blame them?  Or really anyone who has been in the crosshairs of our 'finest'.

Body of Michael Brown, behind crime scene tape
He was heading off to college in a couple of weeks. See the red streak?  That's his life blood pouring out.  Shoot first, ask questions later Mr. Policeman?

OK, now I've got more details:

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports:
[A witness] said she saw the teen, hands in the air, attempt to flee [when police tried to put him in a squad car]. Several shots hit Brown as he ran, Crenshaw said. She complied with a request that she give photos of the scene to authorities…
So I guess it is standard operating procedure to shoot a fleeing teenager in the back.  Because there was really no reason to fear the police in this town.  Well except for the evidence right in front of your nose.

The Obama administration's obstruction of justice is bad....compared to what?

There is quite a bit of hue and cry on the right at thiscAdministration's lack of responsiveness to subpeonas, it's destruction or 'losing' of evidence, particularly emails and its generally contemptuous attitude towards the coequal branches of government.  But excoriating the Obami isn't going to help unless you can demonstrate that what they are doing is unprecedented either in its nature or the scope of the obstruction.   This is a common flaw of partisan accusations - we need context to understand if this is a big deal or just a mole hill that partisans have built up.  Personally, I think  we haven't seen this much obstruction since the Nixon administration but I am not an expert.

Help someone - give us perspective.

Have sex every night. YEAH!

Aside from the five reasons a wife gives here for having sex with her husband almost every night there is a sixth: Strong evidence that men who have frequent sex are healthier and live longer than those who are deprived. We're certainly less likely to be angry or unfaithful.

Read the whole thing here: http://m.huffpost.com/us/entry/5647291

Second tier schools should be very careful not to drive away even more men. Wesleyan is second tier. And getting moreso every day.

Schools with few men are not popular with women.  And schools that drive off all the men's fraternities through persecution and ad hominems are really, really not going to have many men, particularly the fun marriageable kind.  Which the feminists might be shocked to find out is important to most young women.  But feminists don't get out much. To busy protesting the transgendered's attempts to crash women's toilets.

The Feminist shark jumping is spectacular this season

Naomi Schaefer Riley observes in the NY Post:

If you want to see why modern feminism is in crisis, look no further than Michelle Goldberg’s piece in the latest New Yorker.

She describes how transgender activists are protesting the gatherings of the group “RadFem Responds” with “acts of vandalism — stealing electrical cables, cutting water pipes, keying cars in the parking lot, and spray-painting a six-foot penis, and the words ‘Real Women Have D–ks,’ on the side of the main kitchen tent.”

Wait. What?

The radical feminists are under attack because they don’t accept in their ranks people born as biological men but now convinced they’re women. The RadFemmers argue that the transgendered just aren’t oppressed enough to gain membership.

Goldberg explains their position: “Anyone born a man retains male privilege in society; even if he chooses to live as a woman — and accept a correspondingly subordinate social position — the fact that he has a choice means that he can never understand what being a woman is really like.”

It appears that once you decide that sex roles are simply a social construct then anything goes.  Which of course means that you are constantly presented with more and more bizarre subcategories of strangeness all demanding 'acceptance'.  First it was homosexuals who wanted to marry. So a modest subset of the estimated 1.7 percent of the population that is homosexual  turned our laws and traditions upside down. Now it's the transgendered who must be a tiny percent of that 1.7 percent that demand God knows what.  And it looks like the various sects obsessed with their willies and hoo haws and who does what with what, where, who, when and how are all going to diddle each other in a thousand fascinating ways for our viewing enjoyment.

Although I think most people watching will just say eeeeuuuuuwwwww.

Recent paper finds 1950-2009 Solar Grand Maximum was a ‘rare or even unique event’ in 3,000 years

Now this is what I call an inconvenient truth.  It's been a poorly kept secret that very simple solar models using the latest knowledge about the impact of solar wind on cloud formation are much better at predicting the Earth's temperature than the many wildly complex and kluged climate models are.  And now we find out that the great warm up coincides with 60 year Solar Grand Maximum that has now ended?  Hmmm.

What if the CO2 sky monster isn't the villain after all?  What will all the enviro rubes worship?

What does it say when our first African American president hosts a conference that demeans Africa?

US host's conference for "Africa" where VP Biden refers to the 'country of Africa'.  'African' leaders from Morocco point out that their issues and outlook is rather different from those chaps in Mozambique and that by lumping them together the administration has shown them as much indifferent contempt as George W. Bush showed them respect and solicitude.

It's almost as if this President didn't consider himself to be African American or give a rip about the continent.  We already know that he ain't doing squat for Americans of African descent.  I still think he's really an academic feminist - that's who he's working for.  Or maybe he's just henpecked.

Anti semetic blood lust has returned - even in "civilized" places that have no history of it

This outrage in Austraila can't simply be a reaction to Gaza because Russia is killing a lot more Ukrainians who unlike the Gazans never took a shot at them.

It can't be because of oppression of Palestinians because Syria is currently starving 200,000 of them, not allowing food in and shooting anyone that tries to forage. Yet we don't hear shrieking about that.

I think the reason the Gaza situation and Israel and Judaism are targeted is because Jews are a small, successful and utterly civilized group. The global left hates success and has a death wish for western civilization. That and millions of idle, angry and incited young Muslim men mean Jews will probably need to flee even more countries.

Now that's an immigration flood that I would welcome.

Facebook Messenger us an invasive, manipulative piece of software by a self righteous big brother

Zuckerberg is an outspoken liberal who apparently believes in covert monitoring and centralized control of the citizenry.  And exploiting us like milch cows. Bloody low rent Doctor Evil.  Ditch FB Messenger and flip a lusty bird to the rich and self righteous twerp.

Here's what you give up for 'free' software. I'm surprised he didn't ask for my firstborn, or got me to give him the right to vote for me in the next election but there's still time:

No big deal one might think…but the part that the average Facebook User doesn’t realize is the permissions you must give to Facebook in order to use the Facebook Messenger App. Here is a short list of the most disturbing permissions it requires and a quick explanation of what it means to you and your privacy.
  • Change the state of network connectivity – This means that Facebook can change or alter your connection to the Internet or cell service. You’re basically giving Facebook the ability to turn features on your phone on and off for it’s own reasons without telling you.
  • Call phone numbers and send SMS messages– This means that if Facebook wants to…it can send text messages to your contacts on your behalf. Do you see the trouble in this? Who is Facebook to be able to access and send messages on your phone? You’re basically giving a stranger your phone and telling them to do what they want when they want!
  • Record audio, and take pictures and videos, at any time – Read that line again….RECORD audio…TAKE pictures….AT ANY TIME!! That means that the folks at Facebook can see through your lens on your phone whenever they want..they can listen to what you’re saying via your microphone if they choose to!!
  • Read your phone’s call log, including info about incoming and outgoing calls – Who have you been calling? How long did you talk to them? Now Facebook will know all of this because you’ve downloaded the new Facebook messenger app.
  • Read your contact data, including who you call and email and how often – Another clear violation of your privacy. Now Facebook will be able to read e-mails you’ve sent  and take information from them to use for their own gain. Whether it’s for “personalized advertisements” or if it’s for “research purposes” ….whatever the reason..they’re accessing your private encounters.
  • Read personal profile information stored on your device – This means that if you have addresses, personal info, pictures or anything else that’s near and dear to your personal life…they can read it.
  • Get a list of accounts known by the phone, or other apps you use – Facebook will now have a tally of all the apps you use, how often you use them and what information you keep or exchange on those apps.

So now it's the Center for Medicare Services that's destroying evidence and obstructing justice

Add HHS to the IRS, EPA, and FEC as agencies under President Obama who when subpoenaed by Congress or investigators suddenly "loses" the emails in question including all backups and those in recipient archives as well. Which is impossible to do without major organizational collusion. It's obstruction of justice on a wide scale and it seems to be coordinated by someone tasked with ensuring that embarrassing information is kept bottled up.

On foreign policy Barack Obama needs to find his inner George Bush

Althouse:  He would do better to find his inner George Bush right now. Bush would make what he believed was the right decision and allow the media to beat him up all they wanted. That's what I want Obama to do.

Showing the courage of his convictions at this point would save a lot of lives. Unless of course his conviction is to run as fast as possible.

Toadstronauts of Jakarta

My father was in the international oil exploration business - he and bunch of other geologists, geophysicists, petroleum engineers and drilling experts were sent into countries to find deposits of oil and gas - before the country in question had 'struck it rich'.  My Dad's company liked to do this in mob form.  They'd decide that a country was ripe for exploring and bung in a dozen technical experts at once - along with their families. And that meant hotels.  Usually the best hotel (or the only one) for all of the families all at once.

Which always surprised me because it was a profound mistake.  Not so much by the company - they got a group rate, economies of scale in transportation and they could keep an eye on everyone but boy was it a mistake for the Hotel.  Because we were what was known in the vernacular as 'oil field trash' - called that because it was said that we 'blew with the wind' from here to there and beyond. The term also signified a certain cultural something I'm not quite sure what but definitely the opposite of je ne sais quoi. Now in our defense we were very high class oilfield trash, our dads mostly had college degrees. Heck my mom even sang in the Kebayoran Baptist choir. So in general, we were a real step up from the Joads which is what the hotel management must have been thinking: "lots of rich Americans paying twice the going rate and thinking that they're getting a volume discount, what could go wrong?"

Boys.  That's what could go wrong.  There is something truly glorious but also frighteningly feral about boys running in a pack at a large international resort property.  Indeed, as far as we boys were concerned the time we spent at the Hotel Indonesia in Jakarta, Indonesia was "bliss in that dawn to be alive" with us as sans culottes (although we usually did) and the hotel as the Bastille. And we certainly took Hotel Indonesia by storm.

Like the time we snuck into the rooftop gourmet Chinese restaurant and took turns being spun on the biggest lazy susan you have seen in your life.  We got one of the younger boys to go for the record and to our amazement he generated what we believed to be the widest spiral dispersion of vomit that any upscale, gourmet Chinese restaurant had ever experienced.  I can't confirm that because of course we were long gone.  Even the little hurler because in those days we held to the Marine ethos: leave no man behind, even if they're covered in puke.

The Great Anti-smoking Crusade
But we weren't always anti-social.  Sometimes our activities reflected a strong commitment to making our world a better place. Before we were exiled to Jakarta some of us had been indoctrinated on the evils of tobacco at the Singapore American School.  Back then they laid it on pretty thick.  I mean after the (chain smoking) principal gave a little speech about how "'cough, cough' these damn things will kill ya, 'hack, snort', call 'em coffin nails myself" we were treated to nonstop guts, goofy brown lungs and dudes with no jaws smoking through their neck.  Needless to say it hit a nerve.  And we decided that something must be done.  So the hotel had a bunch of bars and lounges and of course each bar and lounge gave away little books of matches with its logo on them for the convenience of the dying wretches.  So it was child's play to detail the smaller boys to snaffle every single match book they could get their hands on in the hotel because during the day all of these bars were empty and open.  As they would remain until the hotel went into (a perfectly understandable) emergency lockdown some weeks later.

Now I know what you're thinking:  awesome Meth raw.  Suffice it to say had we known about Meth we certainly would have given it a go and I have no doubt some of the boys went on to very lucrative careers in recreational drug distribution but back then Meth was still a twinkle in some stoned chemistry student's eye.  No, we were more into straightforward revolutionary pyromania.  Do you realize just how big a fire hundreds of books of matches can make?  And you can't imagine how fast people get upset.  I mean they went to pieces faster than a falling Jenga tower - people yelling, running around with Indonesian fire extinguishers (you know, the ones that they told their boss they had gotten recharged but didn't so they went pphhhht and stopped), hoses, etc.  But we could have told them not to worry because this wasn't our first match fire rodeo - we had done the same thing three years earlier at the Cuscaden House hotel in Singapore on their rooftop garden and pool area no less and nothing really bad came of that.  So by the time the first responders actually responded with something that could be termed a serious response the fire had burned itself out along with most of the evidence.  They must have thought us particularly inept fire starters:  "after all, look how many matches they had to light to get it going."`

Love Javanese Style
Sometimes we let our thirst for inter-cultural understanding get the best of us.  The hotel was the venue for some of the biggest society weddings in the country - they'd rent the great hall and invite half of Java for the big day.  These were mostly formal Javanese/Muslim weddings and this may be my eurocentricity talking but it didn't look like much fun for the bride.  Through most of the proceedings which included a lot of eating and cocktail party chatter the bride sat up on the stage in a little throne like a stuffed kewpie doll.  She couldn't move, drink, pee - well maybe she could pee if she had....never mind.  She just sat their and took it. Or maybe she was petrified at the thought of her wedding night.  I dunno, I was just observing from the catwalks above.  It turns out that there was a full complement of lighting and sound booms strung across the great hall with catwalks for the techies to get to and fro.  We made these our own little Fagin's getaway so you can understand how irritated we were when this ridiculous wedding got started below us.  So anyway, I was getting bored with the proceedings when little idiot Dave ignored our warnings and stepped beyond the catwalk onto one of the bars.  He of course slipped and would have fallen to our punishment if not his death had not his brother caught him by the ankle.  For some reason probably divine, little Dave who usually was the loudest of loud mouths kept his yap shut while dangling in full view at the very back of the great hall - right above all of the people who were at that moment doing some sort of ritual.  I looked quickly around, certain someone had seen him hanging by an ankle.  And of course someone did.  The bride - I saw her, sitting stock still, with her eyes locked on Dave as he was quickly yanked up.  She didn't say a word.  I think had she yelled "aaiieeeee! there are white devil interlopers in the ceiling, get them" it would have queered her wedding or something.

Toadstronauts
In those days we had an insatiable thirst for knowledge - we were always conducting experiments - or at least trying to do odd things.  We were particularly fascinated by the intersection of aerospace and.....toads.  It's a little known fact that urban southeast Asia is crawling - well hopping really - with toads, particularly in the rainy season where they breed a hell of a lot faster than rabbits and make a deafening racket.  A few months later when we moved into our house we found hundreds of the green skinned squatters from the size of a tennis ball down to a cute species that could sit comfortably on a dime hopping happily in our yard. Our Chinese mutt Dicey and calico cat Jingle Bells had a taste for amphibian protein they had picked up in Singapore and evidently Jakarta toads tasted even better because both of them got such distended stomachs from all of the toadage that they could hardly walk until only the 'dimestore' toads, so to speak remained.  Anyway, toads everywhere so it was all toad all the time entertainment-wise at Hotel Indonesia for a while.  For example, how many toads can you put into an Olympic size resort swimming pool?  I honestly don't know, but a lot.  And can a toad survive at the bottom of the pool overnight until the kid who put it there remembers that's where he put his favorite toad? The answer is, surprisingly: yes.

The aerospace angle?  Oh, yeah, aerospace: so we lived in a twenty story high rise that towered over most of the rest of southern Jakarta and Kebayoran Baru and such a privileged vantage point could not be squandered so we began various aeronautical experiments.  We built gliders and glided them off the roof - that ended up being an expensive hobby since they were inevitably either run over or stolen upon touchdown.  We also flew the small Indonesian fighting kites off of the 20th to see how much higher we could get them (a lot).  And parachutes - we did a wide range of different types of parachutes with different payloads.  Our best were the "Apollo" line of parachute and capsule combo holding three toadstronauts from the inexhaustible supply downstairs.  That was how we found out just how indestructible the common Javanese toad is:  not only can they survive indefinitely underwater but they can also survive a 20 story fall.  We'd loaded up a "Gemini" capsule with two toads and gave it the old heave - ho only to have the toads mistake our 'ho' for their signal to bail.  We dashed downstairs and there they were lying apparently dead on the driveway.  But after a few minutes they stirred and hopped off.  Into the parking lot so they may in fact have had a little brain damage.  But still, it was a scientific triumph.

Pornographic Arsony
As was typical in our particular gang, each new attempt at something became more extreme until something untoward happened which we took as our cue to shift to a new entertainment.  This happened with aerospace when my younger brother (PBUH) and his sinisterly named best friend Ben F. decided that if parachutes were cool, then parachutes with flaming boxes underneath them would be even cooler.  Incidentally, Ben F. was a kind of evil semi-genius, he was always scheming some new outrage like a Dr. Evil of the elementary set so to speak (I exclude his full name just in case he has achieved his lifelong ambition to become a real Dr. Evil, you never know).  As I said earlier, he was my brother's best friend at that time and they ran what they called a 'movie' company but what was in reality a child pornography ring whose only asset was one short 3 minute 8mm clip that my parents took of me when I was 3.  Nude.  Except for a foolscap loincloth taped to my front saying Happy New Year! 1964.  The crime boss and his traitorous sidekick would sell tickets. To watch me naked. And if my brother ever tries to pull a stunt like that again I'm turning him into the authorities. And don't think I won't, Todd.

So anyway my brother the porn king and his sinister Swiss sidekick set their box aflame and tossed it out into the great smoky blue yonder.  Unfortunately, a gust of wind blew the box into a balcony that just happened to adjoin the room of Ben's parents:  Dr. and Mrs. Evil. So not having the key to said room and not wanting to be tried for arson in a country whose prisons made those famous Turkish ones look lenient, we advised the young mujahadin to run downstairs as quickly as possible and try to look innocent (not a simple trick with hard cases like them) while we casually sauntered up to the room, knocked on the door and pretended to smell something and inform the authorities.  Suffice it to say, the hotel didn't burn down and all that was lost were a few singed pieces of balcony furniture.  The porn ring got off scot free while we had fun listening to all the Adults speculate on how the balcony furniture in a locked room got burnt:  'lightning", "the staff are smoking their gosh darn clove cigarettes out there, I can smell it".  Being hardened dissemblers we would just smile through it all and bask in the brilliant intuitive sagacity of our Elders.

Indo-tolerance
So you might be asking yourself:  what about the hotel staff?  What did they think of all the flaming parachutes and toad filled pools?  Didn't they notice the lunatic Okie boys running around perpetrating mayhem hither and yon?  Well you have to understand that the Javanese outlook on life, particularly back in the 70s was a bit fatalistic. After all, they had spent the last two thousand years first being conquered by the Hindus and made to carve and worship all these funky 6 armed elephant gods and such only to be invaded by the Muslims who made them burn up all the cool carvings and do the squat five times a day.  Then these lily white honkies with big boom boats show up and start bossing everyone around with their quite sinister, Hollywood villain Dutch accents who then proceeded to get chucked out by the Japanese who had even worse villain's accents and who didn't seem to last long at all except that they lasted a lot longer than the Americans who were the first ones to actually bring any money with them and of course that meant that they only stayed for a few weeks. Upon which the whole kit and kaboodle was dropped into the 'Indonesians' laps only there never had been anyone called an 'Indonesian' before so no one knew what that meant until a smooth talking politico named Sukarno (Javanese hate extra names, most of them go with one really good one) explained that Indonesians were in fact people who did whatever the hell he told them to do and promptly demonstrated what a big mistake that was by letting commies ruin everything. Whereupon he was deposed by Suharto (one name again) who killed a whole bunch of people because they were Chinese who weren't necessarily commies instead of killing the people who were commies who often weren't Chinese. So long story short, the hotel staff were used to life just being one damned thing after another and as far as they were concerned, we boys were just another 'damned thing'.  That's not so say they didn't notice and get payback.  Because they did.

The great Sen-sation
They did it in classic indirect Javanese style. We were lounging like a pride of satiated lion cubs on the roof of one of the sub buildings one day when someone spied a whole bunch of small rectangular pieces of paper strewn and blowing on the lawn out back. Currency, uang, jack, lettuce, money. Out back just blowing around for the taking. Enough currency for even our wildest flights of avarice. Needless to say we doubletimed it down there and filled several pillowcases full of the filthy lucre. And filthy it was - even for money. Filthy 5 Sen notes, shabby 50 Sens even some absolutely worthless 1 Rupiah notes which we threw away because even back then a 'Rup" was only worth a quarter of a US cent and besides....hey wait a minute. You don't think....and that's when we noticed all the under gardeners and pool boys and chambermaids standing on the edge of the field giggling and pointing at us. It seems that we had been collecting old defunct currency from before the great Sukarno inflation and that it took 100 Sen to make one Rup which made a Sen worth .000025 dollars. We had just voluntarily cleaned up quite an historical mess not that the staff were grateful or anything. Indeed they spent  the next few weeks smirking at us 'nouveau riche' idiots.

The lowering of the corporate boom and return to normalcy
It is a cliche trite but true that all good things must come to an end and so ours did with the lowering of the Great Corporate Boom. Apparently the General Manager of the hotel was from one of those countries like Germany or Poland where absolutely no one ever has any fun and not from Bandung as we had been led to believe. And there was definitely nothing indirect about his approach when he figured out who had been screwing with his hotel. So the hotel honcho calls my dad's boss who tells all the dads who then told all the moms. And all I can say is that it was good that school was starting up because all of those other boys, you know - the rotten ones - would have been really bored sitting in their rooms thinking about all the bad things they had done. Me? Well being pure as the driven snow I tut tut tutted the "bad 'uns" as I turned to more refined pleasures.

I discovered to my surprise that girls weren't half bad.

Think this is weird? Well here's a whole bunch of other non- political stuff that I've written. It works just like an Ambien prescription.

Six months after Marijuana legalization and no 'bloodbath' on Colorado roads

It was my experience as Social Chairman of a fraternity that there was always a certain proportion of the membership that were substance abusers and that it mattered which substance they had available to abuse.  If the substance du jour was a case of vodka, then the weekend would be filled with mayhem, fights, crying coeds and possibly a car or two driving at speed down the sidewalks.  I was always relieved when the boys got themselves a big new bag of weed.  Because they preferred that to booze and it minimized the chaos.

I'm not sure whether someone impaired by marijuana is any safer a driver than someone who is drunk but I do know that people who are doing marijuana don't feel compelled to go out and do aggressive things nearly so much.  The 'stoner' stereotype matches up well versus the 'drunk' stereotype because it's true. And in general it is my observation that consumption of one is a substitute for the other - just like you wouldn't consume as many beers if you were also drinking vodka.

Colorado Department of Transportation

This is why it is so astounding to me that we haven't legalized marijuana and the various uppers like amphetamines and cocaine.  They're safer than alcohol and would probably displace alcohol consumption which would result in less mayhem, less chaos.  But the church lady's unreasoning moral panic and the lawyer guild's will to power rule over sanity and basic human decency. Sigh.

So when will respectable Muslims act to stop the genocides being done in their religion's name

Muslims are enraged by Gaza where virtually no one is dying and where Gazans started (and could just as easily end) it. But they don't seem to give a damn about the ISIS genocide of the Yazidi people in Iraq.  (Of course neither did Barack Obama but he's a shallow narcissist so whaddya expect). Failure to protect civilized norms might make some non-Muslims think that Islam isn't a religion of peace after all. I can't help but think thus is causing Muslim proselytizing to collapse. But of course most people who've converted over the centuries did so at the point of a sword.  It's not the most appealing philosophy to voluntarily convert to. Particularly now with all the TV images.

More on the Yazidi genocide at the link.

Obama's "Executive Action" is impunity driven by the President's failures and the ignorance and naiveté of the media

The "Bar" got elected without demonstrating foundation level skills necessary to be President. You know, skills like consensus building, negotiating, working with the other side, choosing wise subordinates and managing them effectively.

He's a classic victim of affirmative action. By all accounts very talented and ambitious, Mr. Obama rose to the top without ever being forced to stand and deliver. A legislator for over a dozen years who never legislated.  A constitutional "scholar"  who neither published nor litigated on a constitutional controversy Mr. Obama is the Chauncey Gardener of our political system: being there at the right time with the right credentials and the right race.

His Presidency is the ultimate product of our degraded, overcredentialed meritocracy: pronounced "perfect" for the job by the talking heads of media and academe who have likewise managed nothing in their lives more challenging than an unruly graduate seminar or balky editor.

One of the problems with the virtual world is that it gives the prolix (and yes you are prolix if you use prolix even once in your life) and articulate word wranglers of media and academe and law far more power and influence than they have earned or deserve and drowns out the voices of people who really do know how to do hard things.

So now the President, by his own feckless lack of leadership and failure to build strong personal relationships with the other power players is hinting that he's going to "do it all by my widdle self" which is madness.  Because if he does he will provoke an historic crisis that even his shallow, prolix pals can't talk him out of.

California considers a doodie duty

To fund free disposable diapers for low income moms because...shit. No, literally. Because childcare won't take cloth. It's an obstacle to employment. Of course California lawmakers could simply cut a subsidy for a powerful group or nick a few cents off of its world leading state employee pension system-cum-bankruptcy rather than taxing young families but then it wouldn't be progressive or something.

If God has to adopt us, then who orphaned us?

I usually ignore most of the theological patter on Facebook.  I've got a lot of Christian friends so being exposed to trite formulations and trendy cliches is an occupational hazard.  But the Retired Senior Pastor of my last church comments from time to time and I have to take him seriously:  he's an accomplished theologian and writer and very intelligent and articulate man besides.  So here is what he said:

A perspective on theological terms: God adopts us into his family, and fully welcomes us into it - that's the fruit of justification. The Spirit works in and with us so we fully belong there, and show family resemblance - that's the fruit of our sanctification.

Now I realize that he's just being professorial here and defining terms for people so they understand what is going on when God saves them.  But it provokes a timeless question in me and his formulation made the question jump into particularly stark relief:

But what happens to orphans that God does not adopt?  And who sired all of these orphans?  And how did they get orphaned in the first place?

Now I suppose the pastorate would say that each of us orphaned ourselves when we disobeyed God.  Yet each of us could only disobey God because God sired us, knowing full well that the moment we were born He would dump us at the orphanage like some randy old millionaire who keeps siring illegitimate children with birth defects because he can't be bothered to wear a condom.  Then in the fullness of time the lusty old coot goes back to the Orphanage and picks out a few of the most promising of His kids to 'save', fully expecting that they will praise Him for saving them from the orphanage He dumped them in.  The rest of his children - His issue - He leaves to slowly starve to death while loudly blaming them for their fate as (literally) "those God damned orphans".

Why would He do that?  I mean if He's Love and Peace and all? Or is He just the ultimate mean old coot?

Lawyers ate the Gospel

Lawyers live to expand their empire of laws into ever new and more invasive nooks and crannies.  And with every expansion we the people who are not lawyers and our voluntary and private institutions and communities are diminished.  The Empire of Law is a never ending quest to subordinate all of society to state audit and control.

It is the antithesis, the negation of the Gospel which God gave to free us from oppressive law.

I wonder: in 1775 did the Redcoat SWAT teams get to steal people's houses?

I did a hypothetical about whether or not the British Army had Swat teams during our revolution here.  But another thought just occurred to me:  perhaps there are so many violent state assaults on Americans (50,000 per year in their homes alone. Which excludes all the people beaten upon the streets or otherwise outside their homes) has something to do with civil forfeiture laws.  Almost all of the raids are done in pursuit of contraband - usually drugs but the Fish and Wildlife service smashes into homes searching for illegal squirrel skins and such.  And if the budding Sgt. Rocks can find contraband then they get to steal, I mean sieze the house it was found in and keep all the jack for themselves.  If you behave like a decent human being (or a Nazi agent) and knock, the evidence might get flushed or otherwise disappear and that would be a bad thing because you couldn't steal, I mean seize anyone's property without meaningful due process of law. And they shoot the dogs because well, the homeowner is going to homeless and he can't take care of the dog so they're going to go to the pound anyway so why not a little salutary target practice?  You know to keep the storm trooper skills up to snuff.

Imagine it's 1775 and the Redcoat SWAT team arrives

I was thinking about the 50,000 paramilitary assaults perpetrated by our police every year.  You know, the standard 3am knock at the door - no wait, that was Nazis and Commies that knocked, the 3am smash the door down as a dozen screaming black clad men shoot all the dogs and toss grenades into dark corners, killing anyone who has the temerity to be confused because they've just been awakened by what seems like a horrific, murderous home invasion threatening their family (as an aside I wonder what the ratio of state sponsored home invasions is to so called 'criminal' home invasions?  Do our fearless heroes invade homes ten times more than common criminals do?  Five?  Twenty? Hmmm).

What do you think the Founding Fathers would have made of this modern chock full of compassion home invasion 'innovation'?  The proportionate number of home invasions for the 3 million Americans back then would have been 500.  500 mobs of screaming cursing lobsterbacks smashing doors down in the middle of the night, slaughtering the barking dogs, grenadiers tossing grenades.  But correct me if I'm wrong but the English Army that was so oppressive didn't do that. Indeed only Boston was occupied by regulars and while it was true that they required the locals to provide quarters for their troops I presume the transaction was done in broad daylight by an officer who kocked on the homeowner's door and read him an edict or something.  I'm sure they didn't bayonet his dogs or inadvertently murder his sleeping baby with a grenade because I think we would have heard of that type of obscene oppression.

So we rebelled against an 'oppressive' state that was far more respectful of persons, pets and property than today's 'heroes' are.  I think we fucked up bailing on England.  Their law enforcement seems to have at least retained basic human decency.  Our boys?  Baboons - dog slaughtering, grenade tossing baboons.

I'm so proud to be an American.

Thieving Chinese company flourishes by ripping off Apple IP

And no this is not race baiting but honest to gosh thievery. If the Chinese don't watch out they'll get a reputation for producing imagination free cheap ripoffs of American innovation. Details at the link.

Work vs. Jail Time for black males by age cohort conclusively prove that 'poverty' and 'racism' don't cause crime

Black men were best off crime-wise when they were poorest and most oppressed.  As they got richer and racism faded, their legal prospects got worse and worse.  There is however, a high correlation between the drug 'war' and the increasing felonization of our society and the collapse of black male relev ance.  Something that our fearless leaders including the Great Black Hope Barack Obama have done virtually nothing to remedy.  It's as if we hated black people more today than we did under Jim Crow.  And it's not just blacks, it's all men.
blackmen
Incidentally, the proportion of black men institutionalized is probably a good proxy for the proportion sodomized.  Funny how our Dear Leader isn't upset about that sexual assault, innit?

Judging from his loyalties Barack Obama is less of a black man than white academic woman.  Because black men ain't got nothin' from this brutha'. The Rubes.

Barack Obama came into office the Lion King and will leave as Silence of the Lambs

Because by the time he's done 'leading' there will be a lot fewer little leftist lambikins baa baa baaing in Washington.  Barack Obama's peculiar blend of lazy, feckless academic progressivism is an exceptionally effective Democide.  More pleasant thoughts about The One's decline into fractions here.

La Tourrette's Syndrome

The belief that anyone who won't cave to the Obami agenda is a greedy, selfish pig and that 'true' conservatives always settle for whatever crumbs their natural masters on the left throw them.  Usually associated with failed Republican politicos-cum-lobbyists.  See Steve LaTourrette

Throughout history there have always been people who would sell out for a little comfort, a little money and the fiction that they were 'players'.  Quisling, Laval, LaTourrette.  The problem is that the Obami use these shallow Repulicrats to serve as a fifth column to get their agenda passed without the need to compromise.  As was demonstrated by this screed from LaTourrette himself cursing, yelping and barking for his corporatist masters.

Be suspicious of so called 'conservatives' shitting on other conservatives/libertarians in mainstream corporatist mouthpieces like Politico.  They almost always have a hand up their ass moving their lips like the sock puppets they are.  Bark Steve, bark.

Holy fascist hegemony Batman! Lefties demanding Corporate Loyalty Oaths

But I thought Corporations weren't people so how can they be loyal?  More from Reason about the flight from reason by our ever portward drifting cretin...I mean creative class.

Leave it to Jonathan Alter to jump the already laughably overblown "problem" of corporations seeking friendlier tax jurisdictions elsewhere right past parody. Forget any discussion of why businesses are relocating. At the Daily Beast, Alter wants potential "corporate deserters" to take...wait, I have to check this again...yep...loyalty oaths.

And you though the whole Benito-tastic flag-draping thing already jumped the shark when President Obamademanded "an economic patriotism that says we rise or fall together, as one nation, and as one people."

Must... resist... the... urge... to... include... Italian... and... German... quotes.

Yes, it's true. Jonathan Alter went there. In response to the dread specter of "inversion"—U.S. corporations merging with overseas firms in order toescape high corporate tax rates, daunting bureaucracy, and a regime that taxes worldwide profits, unlike other G-7 countries—Alter says that reforming our tax system to make it competitive just isn't good enough. Instead, Americans, and the government in particular, should pressure corporate executives to sign promises that they won't take their businesses out of the country.

Even if comprehensive tax reform miraculously passes, it wouldn't reduce the corporate tax rate enough to stop the desertions. That's because other countries have slashed their corporate taxes or eliminated them altogether.

So it's time for red-blooded Americans to take matters into our own hands. My answer is to make every corporation sign something.

Sign what? If Republicans cared about this issue, which most don't, they would revive McCarthy-era loyalty oaths, where people were forced to swear that they weren't communists.

Ummm...That paragraph struck him as a good idea? Apparently so. Anyway, how does that work?

For those companies less able to act as Americans or recognize their real interests, there are two ways to make this work. The president should issue an executive order that says any company that wants to keep its federal contracts must sign a new-fangled [non-desertion agreement]...

But other companies with few or no federal contracts might be tempted to desert anyway.

That's where the rest of us come in. Under my scheme, companies that sign non-desertion agreements would embed a tiny American flag or some other Good Housekeeping-type seal in their corporate insignia for all to see, just as companies during the Great Depression that agreed to Franklin Roosevelt's recovery plan hung an emblem of a blue eagle in their windows with the legend, "We Do Our Part."

German historian Wolfgang Schivelbusch and occasional Reason contributor Thaddeus Russell are among those who have directly connected the New Deal's National Recovery Administration, and its blue eagle, to fascism. Which is to say, this whole "economic patriotism" crusade starts at a bad place and spirals down into a cesspool. So, if that's the model you work from...

To make it clear where this all goes, the National Recovery Administration once boasted, "The Fascist Principles are very similar to those we have been evolving here in America." Its head, Hugh Johnson, noted about the adoption or rejection of the blue eagle symbol and its code, "Those who are not with us are against us."

Or you could just go with, "we rise or fall together, as one nation, and as one people."

Up next requiring loyalty barks and meows from our house pets is the key to eliminating stains and scratched up furniture.

"Leftland uber alles" indeed.

The Rubicon is a small river, easily crossed

But once crossed, it can't be uncrossed.  Ross Douthat points out in the NYT that the Obami are playing a very reckless and dangerous game.  They are hyping an 'impeachment threat' when there is none and the smart money in Washington believes they are doing so because the President intends to nullify our immigration laws by granting legal status to millions of undocumented immigrants.

This certainly would not be the first time this President has governed by decree but this act would be so extreme, such an obvious nullifaction of law and violation of the separation of powers that it could not be interpreted as anything but a turn to Caesarism by the President and his minions.

Caesarism is the tendency of an executive leader to bypass the constitutional mechanisms of governance and govern by decree.  It is named after Julius Caesar who did just that after he crossed the Rubicon and defeated his rivals.  Backed by the important institutions in his day - the army and the equestrian business class, Caesar progressively defenestrated the Senate and his adopted son and heir Octavian - Caesar Augustus - completed the process of destroying the Roman Republic in all but name. The Republican institutions continued to exist but had no real power.

President Obama believes that he has the important institutions in America - the news media, large corporations, universities, educators, the government bureaucracy on his side - and therefore he can achieve his goals while ignoring our Republic's basic law and traditions.  He's gotten away with it thus far and given the array of institutions backing him, he'll probably get away with it this time.  And if he does make no mistake: he will do so as a dictator dictating 'law' to the people.  And if the people vigorously protest, this dictator laid out the intellectual and bureaucratic case for squelching opposition in the name of 'public order'. Just this week they (once again) singled out conservative and liberty groups as the "greatest terrorist threat" in the nation. Threat to their hegemony, that is.  After all, a man who refers to his political opponents as a porn obscenity isn't likely to worry too much about Constitutional niceties unless he thinks he'll be held accountable for his actions. And he hasn't thus far.

The last time we had such an openly fascist President was Woodrow Wilson but he didn't let his dictatorial claws show until we entered WW1 (when thousands of dissenters were imprisoned, deported or stripped of their citizenship) and thankfully his stroke forced him to relinquish his grip on us.  And like Barack Obama, he was a 'progressive' academic who was a constitutional and government "expert" who believed that our Constitution was outdated and therefore should be replaced by the unconstrained rule of public spirited men like himself...and I suppose Barack Obama. Although Woody Wilson certainly wouldn't have approved of BHO because he was a racist who brought Jim Crow segregation to the Federal Government.  By dictatorial decree no less.

And that's the problem:  there's no end to the viciously stupid actions a President can take if he believes he can do so by decree and get away with it.  Things like institutionalizing racism in the government that freed the slaves...or radically transforming our electorate and nation through massive, uncontrolled immigration.

And the real problem with Caesarism is that it destroys the middle ground - you must choose a side and if you want to survive politically and economically your side must win at all costs. Which tears countries apart.  So I hope the Washington whisperers are wrong. That our 'Constitutional Scholar in Chief" really is a student and most importantly, a respecter of our form of governance.  Because if he turns out to be a wrecker then this nation is in for a world of hurt. And Caesarism.

I just love watching vandals at work, don't you?

When I was in college it was the student body's sacred responsibility to be naughty.

Duke students trying to ban naughty words going on line and saying things like "I don't say icky-poo' or "I don't say naughtything". Well I don't say "Duke students are intelligent or rational" because they're not. When I was in college it was the student body's sacred responsibility to be naughty. Now the little dears panic over naughty.  It will make them good apparatchiks, though.

I don't care what your IQ is if you get the vapors over a routine "fuck" or if hearing "bitch" hits you like a....bitch slap to the face then you're useless.

Next the Birkenstock blue stockings will be referring to legs as limbs. What a bunch of dumb cunts (presented in the English usage: a pathetic fool or ass of either gender but usually male.)

Police anally rape New Mexico man on multiple occasions looking for drugs. Don't find any, but boy howdy did they have fun!

One of the rape sessions lasted 14 hours and involved doctors of medicine.  Shades of Dr. Mengele? So church ladies: just what moral purpose does your precious prohibition serve that requires state sodomization? Perhaps we should ban you.  Unless you let the cops rape you unnaturally, of course.

On July 28, 2014, Reason TV released "Do You Have It Up Your Ass?": Drug Warriors in New Mexico Go Too Far. Incorporating footage from cameras on the dashboards and lapels of New Mexico law enforcement officers, the program tells the story of Timothy Young, a man who was pulled over in Lordsburg, New Mexico, for a traffic violation in October 2012.
Hidalgo County deputies looking for drugs searched Young’s truck for more than two hours. After a K9 deputy claimed that his dog Leo alerted on the driver’s seat of Young’s truck, deputies obtained a search warrant to search Young’s body. Deputies then drove Young to the Gila Regional Medical Center, located an hour north in Silver City, New Mexico. Young was X-rayed and, while still in handcuffs, subjected to a digital search of his anal cavity. No drugs were found.
There is more to the story, however. Just three months after the Young incident, David Eckert was pulled over in front of a Walmart for failing to come to a complete stop at a stop sign in Deming, a small town about an hour east of Lordsburg. Eckert was about to begin a 14-hour ordeal. Once again, law enforcement officers called in the dog, Leo, and once again his trainer claimed that the dog alerted on the driver’s seat.
Deputies obtained a warrant and brought Eckert to the hospital in Deming, New Mexico, where a doctor refused to conduct an anal cavity search, calling it unethical. Undeterred, deputies drove Eckert an hour north to another hospital, where doctors had agreed to search Young’s anal cavity. While at the Gila Regional Medical Center, Eckert was X-rayed, digitally probed, forced to endure several enemas, and ultimately put under and given a colonoscopy without his consent. Once again, no drugs were found.
Young and Eckert sued all the parties involved. So far, Young has been awarded $925,000 from Hidalgo County, and Eckert has been awarded $1.6 million from Hidalgo County and the city of Deming.

Cops bust into apartment, drag nude grandmother into the hall, stand around with her naked for a couple of minutes and then lie about the reason for their home invasion

And we build statues and sing paeans to these badged baboons.  Too much power, too little accountability and way the hell too much law result in more and more Americans hating and fearing law enforcement.  Americans like me.

Here is the latest of the latter kind, via the New York Daily News:
A Brooklyn grandmother who had just taken a shower was dragged from her apartment by about 12 cops who then stood by for more than two minutes while she was naked in the hallway, according to video that emerged Friday.
Denise Stewart was in her Brownsville apartment on July 13 when police — responding to a domestic disturbance call at the building — pounded on her door at 11:45 p.m. and demanded entry.
Stewart, 48, cracked the door wearing only a towel wrapped around her body and underpants — and was yanked into the hallway by cops over the screams of her family and neighbors.
The video shows a chaotic scene as a dozen or so male officers burst into Stewart's apartment, while several others struggle to subdue and cuff the nearly naked woman in the hallway outside.
Police did not get a specific apartment number for their call but chose Stewart's residence because it sounded loud on the inside. They claimed a 12-year old girl in the house had visible injuries on her, that becoming their reason to act, although it didn't protect her from being arrested either. The Daily News explains:
Cops removed the 12-year-old from the apartment and say she refused to get into the police car and kicked the door. A police spokesman said the child kicked out one of the police van's windows, with the broken glass cutting the chin of one of the cops. The cops were treated at local hospitals and released.
Denise Stewart was charged with assaulting a police officer, and — along with her oldest daughter, Diamond Stewart, 20, — resisting arrest, acting in a manner injurious to a child and criminal possession of a weapon.
Stewart's son Kirkland Stewart, 24, was charged with resisting arrest. The 12-year-old was charged with assaulting a police officer, criminal mischief and criminal possession of a weapon.
Children's Services found no sign of neglect of the 12-year-old, although it sounds like the police's behavior toward her may count as abusive

The church ladies of both sexes are not amused.
HIGH TIMES it ain't.

Why do they hate us and trust us?

Mike Barone notices something from the Gaza imbroglio:

The second implication is that the Gazans, who are educated and propagandized to hate Israel, nonetheless have faith in the honesty and honor of the Israelis. They abandon buildings after being warned that they are targeted and, as the story recounts, feel safe in watching the bombing from nearby streets. This reminds me of the accounts of Iraqis in Baghdad walking on riverfront streets in front of government buildings which, they correctly deduced, were going to be targeted by U.S. and coalition forces in the initial stages of the Iraq war in 2003. They had a very high degree of confidence — enough confidence to risk their lives — in the technological capacity and the good will of the United States and its multiple coalition allies.

They hate us but they believe we tell them the truth and that if they do what we advise they will be safe.  I suspect that if any Israeli or American were to do something that a Jihadi advised they would be in serious trouble.  And of course the faithful Muslim terrorist never, ever warns his victims - he just kills them.  I'm glad that we're civilized but it's odd that it gets us so little.

Events, my dear Putin, events.

Harold Macmillan, the mid 20th century Tory Prime Minister was  asked what was most likely to blow his Premiership off course and he answered in what is now a famous phrase:  "events, my dear boy, events." It appears that events apply to Vladimir Putin as well.

Up until recently Putin had developed an enviable track record for taking advantage of events to strengthen Russia's geopolitical position and his position atop the Russian state. For example, he took advantage of President Obama's dithering over Syria to cement ties with Bashir Al Assad, getting Russia's first middle east client regime in decades.  Russia also has taken advantage of its Orthodox cousin's economic distress to pull Greece and Cyprus closer in foreign policy to Russia than their EU partners.  He's used sloppy elections and the lack of legitimacy they bring to detach part of Georgia and the Crimea in pursuit of his ultimate goal of recreating the Russian Empire. And the Euros are hopelessly divided over any sanctions against Russia because of all the lucrative trade deals they had inked over the last decade.

And then just when everything was going swimmingly, some knucklehead went and gave the Ukrainian insurgents a serious SAM System which they promptly used to shoot down a bunch of Dutch holiday makers. They then compounded the horror by claiming they didn't do it and stealing and hiding the remains. It's like a cold war cliche. So now Europe is up in arms and most of the rest of the world is recognizing that letting a large bear into your affairs is asking for trouble.  And that sound you hear are a lot of global doors slamming shut for Russia and its crony capitalists.

And of course Putin was the knucklehead that put the weapons system of his own geoplolitical demise in the militia's hands. Apparently Mr. Putin had been believing his reviews about how he was a Machiavellian genius and not just the thuggish KGB apparatchik like everyone said.  This apparently led him to revise his timetable for getting control of the Russian speaking eastern Ukraine. After all, he's so smart and everyone else is so dumb so why wait?  So instead of following his strategy of waiting and capitalizing on events, he tried to push things along using a bunch of out of control freelancers. And he gave them the fancy weapons and they promptly used them to murder innocents...and Mr. Putin (and Russia's) reputation and standing in the world.

It's good to see that events can hamstring bad people too.  Here's to Vladimir "Vlad the Impaler" Putin being impaled on many, many more.

What do you do when punishing 'crime' becomes a moral crime itself?

Unprecedented, brutal and objectively insane.
It is a widely known and shameful statistic:  the United States incarcerates seven times more of its residents per capita than Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the United Kingdom - the countries that are most like us - or as I put it:  the "civilized" Anglo Saxon countries. We, of course are the "uncivilized" one.  Not because we drive a lot of cars or have a lot of guns or are too fat or any of that neo-puritan hooey but because we hold so many men and women in involuntary servitude - a servitude with enough brutality, sexual abuse and contempt to rival the worst slave dealer from the old south.  And in the majority of cases, the 'crimes' these people have been imprisoned for would not lead to incarceration in a 'civilized' country.

It's actually worse than that because while I don't have any statistics, it is evident that the US convicts a far higher proportion of its citizens of felonies than civilized countries do.  This matters even if they are not incarcerated because the convicted felon is under state supervision and surveillance upon pain of imprisonment in the brutal rape factories that we euphemistically call prisons.  Indeed in poor black communities more than half the men are 'supervised' by the state. And to be 'felonized' is to find your life prospects radically curtailed.  Most professions and many industries exclude convicted felons as a matter of course and in our data rich world every felony is a bright electronic mark of Cain that makes it hard to get a job, get a loan, rent an apartment - live.

There are lots of reasons why the US is so much more brutal to its own citizens than other similarly situated nations including our truly iniquitous and objectively insane legal system, our origins as an abstract empire of laws rather than as a 'people' with an organic culture and our legacy of puritan evangelicalism and the attendant moral panics and preference for coercion that come with it.  But I'm not here to solve the problem but to outline it.

It's legal but is it moral?
Clearly what our policemen, prosecutors, judges, and prison wardens are doing is legal - after all, they are punishing people who broke laws duly passed by legislatures and ruled constitutional (and not 'cruel or unusual') by the courts.  But is it moral?  By diligently enforcing a legal system that delivers millions into involuntary servitude - more than three times more than truly medieval Saudi Arabia - we are stripping millions of people of their liberty and via felonization tens of millions of their futures.  When the Soviet Union imprisoned or exiled millions of - duly convicted under the laws of the USSR passed by legislatures and validated by their courts - citizens in its Gulag no one doubted that is was an unjust, indeed evil system that should and would be shut down as soon as civilized people took power there.

So why aren't our policemen, prosecutors, judges and politicians held in the contempt shown for the Soviet Union's? Why don't we consider them nothing but cynical, brutal apparatchiks climbing the greasy pole of a vile system built on the bones of millions?  Why are there statues and paeans to our brave boys in blue who strip so many of their freedom and futures?  Why do so many of the objectively cruelest, most destructive prosecutors in the entire world go on to have successful political careers? How can we as a country hold that we are moral or even legitimate when we are so 'exceptionally' evil and destructive in this regard?  Isn't involuntary servitude and the systematic vandalization of tens of millions' futures a true crime against humanity?  Particularly when other similarly situated countries achieve similar goals without it?

And why does virtually no one in a position of moral authority - our pastors, academics, journalists, retired judges and so on - stand against such an immense and obvious injustice?  Why is our country so indifferent to the plight of so many millions who in any civilized country would have no mark of Cain on them?  What is wrong with us?  How can we be so destructive? And how can we persuade those with influence to stand with the weak, defenseless and utterly unfashionable to return justice to the land?  Because the powerful have shown a remarkable unwillingess to address this issue.

Barack Obama is perhaps the most salient example.  Barack Obama admits to regular, heavy use of Marijuana and occaisional use of cocain as a teen and young adult. He either did not get caught or operating under the more lenient laws of the late 70s and early 80s he didn't face serious consequences.  Yet in almost six years the President has done virtually nothing to lessen the burden of over-criminalization in the so called Drug War. In fact he broke his promise to not harass medical marijuana dispensaries - harassment of these legal businesses rose when Barack Obama took office. And virtually everyone whose anyone shares in this hypocrisy.  Most people in power today used illegal drugs one time or another in their youth and got away with it, in part because our parents were far more compassionate holders of power than our generation has turned out to be. Yet they support indeed probably helped pass today's truly cruel and pointless drug laws.

I submit that this moral crime in its scope, it's destruction of hopes and dreams and in the brutality of its concentration camp/cum prisons makes our criminal justice reign of terror the worst act of state depravity against our citizenry since slavery was abolished, far exceeding that inflicted by the internment of Japanese Americans in WWII.  By behaving in such a disproportionate and 'exceptional' manner the United States announces (proudly it seems) that it is beyond the pale of civilized behavior.  And it doesn't appear that anyone gives a damn.

God help us every one.

Reflections and Remembrances

I recognize that the stuff I write on a day to day basis is not for everyone but from time to time I write things that are really remembrances on past times or reflections on life and living. No politics, no economics, honest.  Some of them have Christian undertones - I used to be much more of a believer than I am now but they are signposts on a journey and I won't vandalize them for ideological purity.  Why do I write them?  Well to be honest I only write them when I can't not write them.  I get something under my skin and I have to extrude it into a piece.  Hmm, that doesn't sound so good, does it?

So anyway, sorry about all the bitchy libertarian stuff - hope you enjoy these pieces.

This is rich: "Blow job" Nina Burleigh calls anti-feminists "DIY Whores"

Well little oral Nina certainly would know a whore if she saw one. In the mirror that is. Much more snarking at Bill Clinton's most grateful abortion advocate here.

"So Nina: where do you stand on tax reform? Do you think me and the boys could get a little...no? Well all I can say is that your legislative priorities are a little narrow. Where's your public spiritedness or public sluttiness for that matter?"

And to think she went to the University of Chicago, my fair college.  Who knew the depths of depravity lurking under all those mousy, obsessively intellectual coeds?  I sure as hell didn't.

Africa has made a lot of progress

Particularly in the last 15 years which is great news. That fact is as significant for human thriving as rising prosperity in China has been. In the name of both decency and equality we should do nothing to deter Africa's progress.

The impact of the Pax Americana on the world has been astounding.

Great visualization of the worldwide decline in violence. "We are living in perhaps the most peaceful time in human history". Helluva time for the US to withdraw from the world don't you think?

Very cool graphics. Very encouraging tale. Maybe we don't suck after all.

Imagine if the 1960s south would have had gun control?

Can you say slaughtered civil rights workers? I knew you could. Eugene Volokh excerpting "This nonviolent stuff will get you killed" about the role of guns in the civil rights movement. Of course our modern up to the date gun-o-phobes argue that government is our friend and only wants to take care of us and keep us safe from ourselves. And that's why the naughty guns have got to go.  They might interfere with their making I mean helping us do things.

If we don't confiscate your cantaloupe seeds then Al Kumquat will have won.

We will have killed Osama bin Liriope for nothing.  Our fearless bureaucrats stamping out seed crime wherever it raises its sinister head. Gosh darn Zinnia pushers!

“Agri-terrorism is a very, very real scenario,” she said. “Protecting and maintaining the food sources of America is an overwhelming challenge ... so you’ve got agri-tourism on one side and agri-terrorism on the other.”

I say fire 'em all and let unemployment sort 'em out. Seed troopers, that is. As Bugs Bunny would say:  "what a bunch of maroons".

The disastrous federalization of the states

We end up with zombie states forced to do the Feds bidding. Accountability for delivery is severed from revenue and experimentation and diversity are destroyed. That's how a Democrat party panicked by a concentration of wealth among 10 million Americans happily promotes a concentration of ultimate wealth and power in an institution effectively controlled by a few dozen old lawyers.

And our civil society and culture dissolve apace. It's all so progressive. Important article at the link.
