Because both retail happy endings provided by benevolent gods whether they be spiritual or political. Martin's saga doesn't include any of these just so stories. Like ours, Martin's gods are cruel and capricious. And most of us don't live happily ever after.
It's that congruence with lived life that attracts so many of us to his brutal and bloody vision.
