I find the greater NYC area (including NJ) to be the most fascinating of places.
- They are the most authoritarian polities in North America, Mercatus ranks NY 51st in total liberty
- They spend twice as much on basic things like schools per recipient
- Despite the highest taxes, their infrastructure is falling down around them
- It is virtually impossible to do anything without 'pull'. For example, to build a 2000sf home/townhome in NYC would cost $450K, which includes lots of lawyer time (before land cost): Houston: 150K
- Their 'leaders' regardless of party strut around like two bit caudillos, although with Christie, you're getting twice as much thug for your two bits.
I've never been to place where people's self concept is so detached from their reality. They actually think that they live in a rich, first world city despite being the 41st richest out of the 49 biggest metro areas. That's five worse than San Antonio which is in the middle of nowhere and 70% Mexican, for cripes sake. It's like watching some little kids bully each other, thinking that they're on top because they're too stupid to realize just how far down they are.
And we're supposed to hire the crappy hacks who got them there to be President? Christie may be the best that NJ can get in it's desiccated state. But out here in Missouri, we require our leaders to know their ass from a hole in the wall without acting like a total thug. (obviously that doesn't apply over the river in Illinois).
Greater New York: Third World American style. They can keep their Caudillos.
