Now: the DNC just loves budget cuts and public employee pay freezes, before the Obama announcement of same: not so much. Orwell would smile. Hat tip Jim Geraghty.
I'm not sure whether to laugh or cry. An incredulous liberal voice at FireDogLake reports, "[Organizing for America, the old Obama campaign apparatus that is now] the organizing project of the Democratic National Committee, wants you to organize in support of freezing public worker salaries. And don't worry, later in the email, OFA tells you how the Administration has really been responsible on this issue -- they've frozen salaries of White House officials and political appointees, frozen non-defense discretionary spending, and more. So go out there and sharpen those pencils and tell everyone how great it is to cut people's pay!"
Why cry, you ask? Because this suggests that for many Democrats, today's instantly denounced, outrageous, extremist proposal from Republicans can be tomorrow's acceptable compromise if Dear Leader orders it so. There's a bit of "always been at war with Eastasia" at work in this; in the end, it's clear that for many of the rank and file, the key criterion is not whether a pay freeze is a good idea or a bad one but whether the munificent Sun-God in the Oval Office is currently giving it a thumbs up or a thumbs down. We may not agree with the thinking of the liberals who are objecting, but at least they're thinking for themselves.
