On victimhood

'Accredited' victimhood is the modern American luxury good.  To be the victim, even tangentially, of an approved 'ism or 'phobia is to have unassailable status in the community.  If we challenge an accredited victim's actions, beliefs or feelings they respond with:  "how dare you?  how do you know what a victim like me feels or went through?".

But we all wallow in our victimhood (and I am chief among sinners in this regard).  It's our 'Precious'.  Just like Gollum we are in love with our victim status because unlike other possessions we can claim that it is wholly ours, wholly unique.  "But you don't understand" is the cry of the victim showing his Precious for all to see.  "We's loves our Precious, we's puts its to bed, sings lullaby's to it, tucks it in.  And if anyone gets near our Precious we fights and yells.  No! gets aways! My Precious, my darling Precious!"  And like Gollum our obsession with our Precious warps and distorts us and separates us from Christ.  He offers to take our victimhood away and place it on his shoulders:  "No! Gets away from my Precious, stay away, stay away".

I pray that all of us may accept God's grace and throw our various 'Preciouses' onto the altar where they belong.  To be consumed by Christ's love.
