Italy: one tattered, decrepit old canary in the Euro coal mine

The country is stagnant to declining.  With per capita GDP about 40 percent of Americas, it is stunningly poor.  Truly shocking for such an otherwise civilized place.  The birthplace of fascism (the fasces were carried by the lictors or ceremonial guards of Roman magistrates) is now showing just what a dead end it has become.
