The latest news: labor force participation among men 25 to 54 (aka: Dads) is at an all time low. Part of this is due to the recession's destruction of private industry even while state (and disproportionately female) employment soars. But the difference between male and female participation trends has its roots in our historically without precedent legal system. As the Economist magazine said in a cover story: "Never in the civilized world have so many been locked up for so little". And roughly 1 in 6 Americans and 1 in 4 men are caught up in our so called 'criminal justice' system. And thanks to companies like Equifax once a person is tagged a 'criminal' by one of the thousands of felonies in our system, they can never escape the stain. The result: plummeting male educational attainment (why bother?) and labor force participation (again, why bother? they're crooks).
I believe that this level of state criminalization of men hasn't existed since Stalin built his Gulag. Of course our system is less murderous. Instead it is 'therapeutic' with hundreds of thousands of psychologists and counselors feeding off their victims, oops, I mean 'treating' their 'clients'.
And of course, uneducated, unemployed 'crooks' make lousy husbands and fathers. So misguided efforts to 'crack down' on 'bad' behavior have resulted in the ongoing destruction of the family and a steady shift to defacto polygamy: first in the African American community and now via sperm banks to unmarried white women. And of course female led households and schools naturally have difficulty handling boys so our psychiatric community helpfully (and profitably) stones tens of millions of them with amphetamines and cocaine analogs like Ritalin so that women can more comfortably 'manage' them.
But this is all well known to social scientists. The question at hand is how our moral and religious leaders could have stood by and silently watched such a catastrophe unfold. Tens of millions of disconnected feral men who've been drugged from childhood is a disaster for our society, yet preachers will preach against smoking and pornography for years before making a peep about the state driven catastrophe roaring all around them.
At some point someone in a position of moral authority is going to have to take a risk.
