There are few surer signs that things are going badly than a sudden scarcity (hence price rise) in a civilization's essential commodity. Bacon serves that role in America. Imagine how big the Republicans would have won had they ended every campaign ad with: "And to top it off, the price of bacon has doubled!". Gentlemen: to your fallout shelters.
