John Fund describes how Singapore went from $500 per capita to $52000 per capita in 50 years while providing security without crooked Ponzi schemes. I lived there from 1970 to 73 and nearby until 1977. I believe Americans of all stripes could learn much from Singapore.

However, Singapore has two glaring failings that it could learn much from (parts) of the US about:

First it is a very authoritarian and controlling place that is increasingly unattractive to the young and creative. It needs to loosen up the Disney world levels of social control and allow a little mess around the edges.

Second (and related to the first), its real estate prices are insane due to excessive control by the state. It should tolerate a lot more mess and allow the market to meet demand as it chooses.  Failure to solve these problems is creating a political and demographic time bomb as the middle class - facing narrowing horizons - flee or fail to reproduce themselves .

Sadly, Mr. Lee's heirs aren't the ones to do this. Others need to win power which means PAP needs to lose. Gracefully, please.

I actually have some sympathy for this view if it were honestly held. But Barack Obama held it cynically without understanding. 

We can't save Middle East Muslims from themselves. They need to become big boys and girls and learn to save themselves. Something they haven't done since the Ottomans took over their franchise seven hundred years ago.

Just because the greenhouse effect is easy to understand doesn't mean anthropogenic global warming is an emergency.

In the midst of a generally thoughtful and appropriately skeptical pro warmest think peace the author says:

Again, most of this is unobjectionable but that first sentence is a whopper.  So we know that germs cause cancer because the germ theory of medicine is easy to grasp? Or we know that sprinklers cause thunderstorms because the phase change nature of matter us easy to understand? Obviously simple test tube theories about one small component of the atmosphere tell us little about what is going to happen in a complex, chaotic mega system.

And that's assuming that the  writer understands why the greenhouse effect behaves the way it does in the first place (it's not what you think) or that he knows that the greenhouse impact of each successive doubling of CO2 halves. Sadly, the average lay-hysteric never gets beyond the gap jawed credulousness of Ezra "we're all gonna burn" Klein.

Which isn't sufficient for an informed opinion.

Let there be two America's: the case for Federalism.

I would love to see true Federalism in America but most blue states would suffer Mediterranean levels of economic collapse as their industries - up to now protected by Red State legislators - are devoured. But it would be fun to watch the chaos for a while. Places like California and New York have all the advantages.  Yet they've squandered them so that they are poorer and more bankrupt than places like Oklahoma or Tennessee which have virtually none. Which is a-fricking-mazing to me..

The humanity and social science parts of these institutions have become so corrupt and corrupting that they need to be defunded. As do the more politicized sciences like "public health" and climate "science". Keep the trade school bits and let the rest float free of tuition, tax and cash subsidies. The wailing and gnashing of teeth will be a sight to behold but is necessary if our civilization is to ever recover from their subsidy fueled depredations.

Note how from the very first paragraph the tip sheet assumes that anyone making a complaint is a “survivor,” not an “alleged victim” or other neutral language.

Nowhere do these guidelines say “Be sure to give the alleged perpetrator or his/her representatives a chance to respond to the allegations.”

But they do say:

“Listening is important. Make sure to allow ample time for the source to tell you their story. Don’t rush them. Don’t press for details if they are not willing. Allow them to tell you what they feel comfortable talking about.”

The closest the document comes to saying “Check the facts!” is this:

“Corroborate information. Be aware that accounts of what happened may not be entirely accurate as trauma can impact a person’s memory. A person may forget details or misremember due to the psychological effects of the trauma. Be sure to corroborate your information with other sources to the extent possible.”

But note how any discrepancies in an account of an assault are pre-judged to be the result of that assault, the reality of which is not to be questioned.

One could argue that Sabrina Rubin Erdely followed these guidelines in her Rolling Stone piece. She only corroborated the facts in the story to the extent that they would not upset her “survivor.”

Columbia Journalism School is the institution investigating that Rolling Stone piece. Fortunately, Steve Coll, dean of the school, is a first-rate journalist. Hopefully, they will produce a solid report—and then circle back to take another look at their own guidelines for reporting these stories

The 133-page Serious Case Review (SCR) was published on March 3, the same day that British Prime Minister David Cameron convened the so-called Downing Street Abuse Summit, during which he unveiled a raft of new measures aimed at bringing more offenders to justice.

The report — which reveals that there are "grounds for believing" that 373 girls have been sexually exploited by gangs in Oxfordshire since 2004 — focuses on the accounts of six girls and their contact with the authorities. The girls were the victims in the "Operation Bullfinch" trial, in which seven Muslims were found guilty, in May 2013, of trafficking and raping the girls between 2004 and 2012

STREETCAR NAMED CROOKED AND INEPT:

The project has been hilariously mismanaged from start to (never-never) finish, though it would be a lot more hilarious if we hadn’t spent millions upon millions of taxpayer dollars on it.
Nonetheless, I am sad to hear that my fair city may terminate its streetcar service. We’ve got the tracks, we’ve got the cars, we’ve got a whole lot of new buildings along H Street that were counting on its existence, so we might as well just run the silly thing. Particularly since failing to do so has implications for future development.

Frack it! Fracking only works in North America and Australia.

And the biggest, most consequential energy innovation in the last half century could only happen in places with private mineral ownership. This is because state ownership means that the only way the individuals involved in the process can profit from it is through restraining and delaying the process until they extract rents commensurate with their political power. And it makes the land owner a victim with no upside to compensate him for the inconvenience.

Imagine: perhaps $150 trillion ($50 times 3 trillion recoverable barrels) dollars of wealth available to Americans, Canadians and Australians that is all but inaccessible to those who have been "saved" by their glorious governments. What a stunning price to pay to be manipulated by lawyers.

Palestinians recognize that Israel is the region's most vibrant democracy. Why can't Obana?

Not very many Palestinians want to live in peace with Israel but they want what only Israel has: democracy, liberty and true, home-grown prosperity.  Here's some examples:

He was rooting for Isaac Herzog (“Buji”) and deplored Benjamin Netanyahu, but after acknowledging that his candidate had lost, he nevertheless tweeted, “Israel is the world’s most vibrant democracy.”

Even Hamas issued numerous tweets urging Israeli Arabs to vote for the Arab parties’ Joint List. As Gordon says, “one can only imagine what Gaza residents must have felt at seeing Hamas urge Palestinian Israelis to exercise a right Palestinians in Gaza are denied by their own Hamas-run government.”

Palestinians were able to vote in 2006. But since then, Mahmoud Abbas in the West Bank and Hamas in Gaza both have refused to call new elections for fear of losing power.

Gordon notes that Abbas’ refusal to hold elections has implications for the peace process. It means that he lacks the democratic legitimacy needed to make the kind of concessions any peace agreement would entail. Palestinian human rights activist Bassem Eid made this point when he stated that Abbas will never be able to make peace with Israel, because he currently represents nobody except himself, his wife and his two sons.

You don't have to be a cynic to see a kind of parallel between the actions of the former prosecutors and the accusations they are making against those they are prosecuting. One group is making money by trading on their insider knowledge and unique relationships. And the other group...

Speaking as a long time resident of St. Louis, the barbecue sauce consumption capital of the world and Missouri, the buckle of the barbecue belt, have they popped their cork?  I can almost understand the regulation of cars, guns, booze and sex (well not really) but back yard barbecuing? Forgive them Lord, they know not what they do.  Screw that. If they try to take my back yard barbecue they will have to pry it from my burnt and blistered hands.  This will provoke mass rioting in St. Louis.  Mobs pushing smoking braziers will fire flaming briquets into government buildings.  Children with firestarter filled super soakers will set Federal herbacious borders (and themselves) aflame.  EPA administrators with (organic) apples in their mouths will be roasted on spits (and liberally slathered with mustard based grilling sauce because I bet they've been feeding on kale and quinoa and taste like hell).

When Americans think about nuclear war, we tend to think about the apocalyptic scene at the end of Dr. Strangelove, a war involving thousands of megaton-yield hydrogen bombs. (A megaton is the equivalent of a million tons of TNT, or about 60-70 times the power of the Hiroshima atomic bomb, which had an explosive power of around 15 kilotons, the equivalent of 15,000 tons of TNT). But in 1951, neither the United States nor the Soviet Union had yet tested a hydrogen bomb, and the duck-and-cover era authorities were basically preparing people for a rerun of Hiroshima and Nagasaki with us on the receiving end of relatively small numbers of (relatively) small nuclear weapons. "Duck and cover" advice is particularly effective there.

Why the developed world's carbon dioxide reduction efforts are futile in one chart.

Below is a chart of projected global CO2 emissions by major emitter. China under the agreement negotiated by President Obama will add more CO2 output than the entire developed world's total CO2 budget by themselves. This demonstrates conclusively that if CO2 emissions are as destructive as alarmists claim then we need to pivot to radical sequestration strategies. Yet it's mostly crickets from the IPCC high command on mitigation initiatives. Which suggests either absolute negligence or a recognition that - like me - they think their forecasts are overwrought.

If tiny Israel can see off the entire Arab world for almost 70 years and get rich to boot, then it is unseemly for a nation that is 50 times larger and almost 100 times richer to soil our dainties every time some hackemoff demonstrates that they've figured out the internet or an apparatchik like Putin gets temporary control of a fading oil kleptocracy.

The only thing that can kill the West is the West. It is what the Obami and their Eurocrat allies in fraud are doing as they busily jack hammer at the foundations of our civilization from within that should frighten us. Carbon capture "total lunacy"?

Anthony Watts argues that storing billions of tons of CO2 near population centers is a nuclear bomb scale catastrophe waiting to happen.

Herzog makes no mention of potential risks of concentrating large quantities of CO2. Why do I think CCS is so terrifying? The reason I am frightened of CCS is, the world has already experienced what happens if a large quantity of CO2 is abruptly released.

Concentrating large quantities CO2 in one place is dangerous. A similar release to the Lake Nyos disaster, near a major city, however unlikely, however elaborate the safety precautions, could potentially kill millions of people.  The CCS concept involves the concentration of billions of tons of CO2 per annum in thousands of locations near major industrial centres. Can anyone imagine nobody will ever make just one mistake, with an operation on that scale? Just one release of a minute fraction of this concentrated CO2 could be as devastating, in terms of loss of life, as the detonation of a small nuclear bomb.

Obamacare chaos is magnified by the President's unilateral immigration chaos.

It turns out that Ocare plus Amnesty generate a powerful incentive to replace citizen employees with immigrants and otherwise exempt workers, which will drive down employer funded insurance participation rates particularly for low wage employees.

Because the 6 million immigration beneficiaries aren’t eligible for Obamacare tax subsidies, hiring them reduces employers’ chances of triggering the employer responsibility tax. Employers have a powerful financial incentive to hire them in place of U.S. citizens and permanent residents. The president’s unilateral grant of work permits, combined with the fact that these workers cannot trigger the employer responsibility tax, makes those workers significantly more attractive.

To make matters worse, recent reports indicate that millions of U.S. citizens and lawful residents — who are eligible to receive Obamacare tax subsidies — have opted to defy the individual mandate and forego buying expensive health insurance. Under the statute, that’s supposed to trigger a tax, too, but the president has effectively gutted this provision by unilaterally creating 19 categories of exemptions, including a blanket one for “general hardship.”

Because individuals who don’t buy health insurance won’t be claiming any Obamacare tax subsidies, they — like the 6 million immigration action beneficiaries — cannot trigger the employer responsibility tax. Both of these categories of workers are more attractive to hire, because they will not, by definition, have subsidized health insurance under Obamacare. The inevitable result is that more workers will lack employer-provided health insurance coverage.

My God what a bloody travesty.

David Boren should know better

The President of OU, former governor and senator David Boren expelled two students for leading a racist chant at the SAE fraternity on campus. Expelling students for speech - no matter how repugnant - is against the law and a distinguished lawyer like Boren knows that. Perhaps Mr. Boren has had too much unchecked power and adulation for too long? Perhaps he forgets his place as a servant of the people, not their dictator.

Prosecutors and police routinely commit crimes in the course of their duties. And almost never are held accountable.

And when judges call them on their criminal behavior they boycott the judge.
 
I’ve addressed the problem of prosecutorial misconduct here a few times before — both its prevalence, and the fact that misbehaving prosecutors are rarely sanctioned or disciplined. Recently (or perhaps the better word is finally), some judges have begun to speak out about the problem including, most notably, Alex Kozinski, the influential judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit.

Late last year, South Carolina State Supreme Court Justice Donald Beatty joined Kozinski. At a state solicitors’ convention in Myrtle Beach, Beatty cautioned that prosecutors in the state have been “getting away with too much for too long.” He added, “The court will no longer overlook unethical conduct, such as witness tampering, selective and retaliatory prosecutions, perjury and suppression of evidence. You better follow the rules or we are coming after you and will make an example. The pendulum has been swinging in the wrong direction for too long and now it’s going in the other direction. Your bar licenses will be in jeopardy. We will take your license.”

You’d think that there’s little here with which a conscientious prosecutor could quarrel. At most, a prosecutor might argue that Beatty exaggerated the extent of misconduct in South Carolina. (I don’t know if that’s true, only that that’s a conceivable response.) But that prosecutors shouldn’t suborn perjury, shouldn’t retaliate against political opponents, shouldn’t suppress evidence, and that those who do should be disciplined — these don’t seem like controversial things to say. If most prosecutors are following the rules, you’d think they’d have little to fear, and in fact would want their rogue colleagues identified and sanctioned.

The state’s prosecutors didn’t see it that way. Beatty singled out South Carolina’s 9th Judicial District in particular. There’s a good reason for that: He noted in his talk that two prosecutors from that district, overseen by Solicitor Scarlett Wilson, had already been suspended for misconduct and at the time of his talk, another complaint was pending. A recent complaint by the state’s association of criminal defense lawyers recently laid out a list of other complaints (PDF) against Wilson’s office. (You can read Wilson’s response here.)

But Wilson took personal offense at Beatty’s comments. She accused him of bias and sent a letter asking him to recuse himself from criminal cases that come out of her district. In one sense, Wilson is unquestionably correct. Beatty is biased. He’s clearly biased against prosecutors who commit misconduct. But that’s a bias you probably want in a judge, particularly one that sits on a state supreme court. It’s also a bias that isn’t nearly common enough in judges. (Not only do most judges not name misbehaving prosecutors in public, they don’t even name them in court opinions.)

Other prosecutors around the state jumped on, and now at least 13 of the head prosecutors in the state’s 16 judicial districts, along with South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson, are asking for Beatty’s to be recused from criminal cases. This would presumably end his career as a state supreme court justice.

Radley Balko observes:

The most plausible explanation for all of these stories is that a significant number of prosecutors just don’t want to be held accountable to anyone but themselves. I suppose a lot of us would like to have that sort of protection in our jobs. But few of us do. And the rest of us don’t hold positions that give us the power to to ruin someone’s life with criminal charges, to convince a jury to put someone in prison or to ask the state to put someone to death.

And what's truly frightening is the risks reformers like Mr. Balko are taking: since almost everything is against the law it only takes one offended prosecutor to bankrupt him and destroy his  reputation. The church mice who we call judges - many who used to be prosecutors - certainly won't ensure that justice is done.

And this isn't a liberal vs conservative issue it's a state fetishist vs. Classical liberal one. Do you believe in people over bureaucracy?  Well do you?

Wesleyan University is now offering a “safe space” (formerly known as a “dorm”) for students of the LGBTTQQFAGPBDSM persuasions, or, for those who need things spelled out, for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Transsexual, Queer, Questioning, Flexual, Asexual, Genderfuck, Polyamourous, Bondage/Disciple, Dominance/Submission, Sadism/Masochism student acolytes. If you are so heteronormative as to see the word “FAG” in the center of that jumble, you will surely not be allowed into the “safe space,” known as Open House.

At this rate of exponential increase in student gender identities, there will soon not be enough paper in college bureaucrats’ offices to provide official recognition and “safety.” Parents concerned that their little darlings may come home with bruises and abrasion from the whips and leather handcuffs need not worry, though. This proliferation of in-your-face sexual identities is all posturing, just part of the dance between students desperate to find one last means of being transgressive and college bureaucrats eager to show their sensitivity and to justify their siNJx-figure salaries. Students who should be studying European history and the roots of the novel—would that such subjects were still taught—are instead combing the farthest reaches of the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic Manual for ways to distinguish themselves. By posing what they hope will be rejected demands on their administrations, they seek only to prove that they are living a life of oppression.

Despite the seemingly all-inclusive aspirations of the LGBTTQQFAGPBDSM acronym, the university recognizes that not every student will feel comfortable in this new “safe space.” To accommodate still further variations in student interest, Wesleyan’s Office of Residential Life offers a variety of unique living options. Farm House provides students “interested in the politics and culture of food production and sustainability a place to cultivate a mutualistic relationship with the earth that provides them with their lunch everyday.” Residents of Earth House can “espouse the values and principles of social ecology, deep ecology, and eco-feminism” while simultaneously “challenging traditional social structures and replacing them with new, creative and egalitarian alternatives.” African-American upperclassmen are welcome to apply to live in Malcolm X House, where they can dedicate themselves to “the exploration and celebration of the cultural heritage of the African Diaspora, both for themselves and for the larger Wesleyan community.” Turath House is for Arab, Middle Eastern, and Muslim students looking “to articulate their views and express and affirm their culture and religion without fear of harassment and discrimination.”

His commentary on the US and Europe emphasizes governmental process (Europe can't make decisions, Republicans are big meanies) when it is what the state and private entities are doing that is driving change. Social democracy has turned out to be a dead end. But one with hundreds of millions of clients invested in its malign perpetuation. And Robert Kuttner can't see this because it would mean repudiating everything he has stood for all his life.

So we get this twaddle about climate change and process. No wonder we're in such bad shape.

Except for campus rape

Barack Obama rationalizes the DOJ's (correct) decision not to prosecute Ferguson cop Darren Wilson. Saying:

“We may never know exactly what happened, but Officer Wilson — like anyone else who is charged with a crime — benefits from due process and a reasonable-doubt standard."

So rogue cops get due process and reasonable doubt but college men get only a preponderance of evidence standard in kangaroo courts? The President needs to decide if he wants one or the other.

Three points:

1. This is fairly normal for a poorer St. Louis municipality. The richer ones only loot outsiders.

2. The legal profession is complicit in the looting because of the Missouri tradition that lawyers can easily “fix” tickets with no points or information flowing to insurers: just pay the fine and a fee to the lawyer and you’re off. Unless you’re poor and can’t pay, that is.

3. Massive over criminalization and over enforcement have their roots and legitimacy in “broken windows” policing. Hyper aggressive and picayune “broken windows” policing was the European American establishment’s response to the breakdown of the old cultural consensus in our cities due to waves of both domestic and international migration from very different cultures. Its top down, coercive nature is an admission by elites that we have not sustained a common culture where everyone abides by common norms. It is an admission of cultural defeat by European America. As is the war on drugs which complements and intensifies it’s effects.

Yes, Menendez is a crook. But he's being prosecuted for his truth telling.

The moment he points out the President's behavior vis a vis Iran and Israel charges that the Obami had bottled up for years come gushing forth.

"The EU experiment has failed"

Ya think?  Actually the more accurate statement is that: having failed in single countries, Social Democracy sought to expand its reach so far that no real competitor could challenge its patented blend of elitism and bribes to the masses looted from the self same masses.  Yet despite expanding to an entire continent, Social Democracy failed because it gave neither the elites nor the masses any reason to produce wealth and so eventually everything was looted away. It is a testament to the thoroughness of the social Democrat criminality that an almost comprehensively looted Obamite America outdistances Europe easily.

The slow-motion crisis of the European Union is the big story that rarely gets the attention it deserves. Even an event like the recent terrorist attack in France that left 17 dead is often isolated from the larger political, economic, and social problems that have long plagued the project of unifying the countries of Europe in order to harness its collective economic power, and to avoid the bloody internecine strife that stains its history.

On the economic front, the E.U.’s dismal economic performance over the last six years was summed up in a December headline in Business Insider: “Europe Stinks.” The 2008 Great Recession exposed the incoherence of the E.U.’s economic structure, particularly its single currency, which is held hostage by the diverse economic policies of sovereign nations. The data tell the tale. The E.U.’s GDP grew 1 percent in 2013, anemic compared to the U.S.’s 2.2 percent. In December 2014, unemployment in the E.U. averaged 11.4 percent, while in the U.S. it was 5.6 percent. We are troubled by our labor force participation rate of 62.7 percent, a 36-year low. But in the E.U., it was 57.5 percent in 2013. Our recovery from the recession may be slow by our historical standards, but it is blazing compared to the E.U.’s.

The E.U.’s economic woes have many causes, but intrusively regulated economies and outsized government spending on generous social welfare transfers are two of the most important. Despite the rebuke of such policies delivered by the recession, government spending as a percentage of GDP has actually increased in the E.U., from 45.5 percent in 2007 to 49 percent in 2013, even as many Europeans decry the harsh “austerity” measures called for by countries like Germany. Greece, the E.U member increasingly in danger of being forced to exit the monetary union and thus risk its unraveling, has nonetheless raised its government spending from 46.8 percent in 2007 to 59 percent in 2013.

As Josef Joffe of Germany’s Die Zeit newspaper summarized in January, “These ailments are deeply embedded in economies that lag behind on investment, innovation and competitiveness . . . Europe as a whole is beginning to look like Greece writ large. But the long-term data whisper to Europe as well as to Greece: Reform or decline.”

Now it is time for all good Social Democrats to return to the horror swamp from whence they came and to allow, honest, civilized government unsullied by their obscene level of looting to return. The fresh breeze of honesty and reality will cleanse Europe of the left looters' self righteous stench.

Now back to America to evict the remain looting frauds from their rapidly bankrupting government sinecures.

Iran: "Nuclear deal is very close"

This is a travesty wrapped in a disaster portending a tragedy. Our President, in a fresh burst of contempt for America's essential role in the world and the lives and livelihoods of hundreds of millions is guaranteeing an epic nuclear arms race in the most conflicted and eschatalogical corner of our world. It is utter madness and everyone outside of this fatuous, benighted White House knows so. Indeed, even otherwise stalwart and corrupt Democrats like New Jersey Robert Menendez are saying so.

This obscenity needs to be denounced by a huge bipartisan majority. It's time for all those duped by cheap rhetoric and racial hipness to atone for their careless electoral  credulity by denouncing this agreement as DOA and threatening bloody retribution if Iran tries to live by it.  The President must be repudiated and rebuked by all decent men for the  moral crime he is committing.

This is not some bullshit political issue like ISIS. This is truly existential. My God how could we elect a President who could be so stupidly evil?
