Of the top 16 half are American and if you consider that fully 13 of the 16 are former British colonies or protectorates you realize just how anglocentric international immigration is.

Whatever the world wants it appears that we anglospherians have boatloads of it.  Tally ho!

So why are we talking about the income inequality squirrel?

Until the labor market can soak up tens of millions of surplus workers plus all the new immigrants we'll never get more equality except by state coercion.

But Dems like that: the party of government gains nothing if a problem solves itself.

They're our saviors.

About time we regained sanity on drugs

Although it would be nice to see a few of the most brutal DEA agents strumg up por encourager les autres.

NSA DEA: since your boys no doubt flagged this and you are desperately trying to fabricate an alternative evidence narrative for the crimes of 'speaking that Frenchy talk' and imagining a future where you don't have to worry whether the black masked thugs smashing into your home are government agents: I was joking: J O K I N G.  Look it up in the dictionary.  Your black mask will hide the fact that you move your lips when you read.

Casey Mulligan is making the Obami take a mulligan on O'care

But I bet you a buck that the lightbringers shank that one into the Mulligtawny as well.

A U Chicago labor economist explains (see link below) using small words and talking very slowly for the wee ones how the expansion of social democracy in America (at the same time it's collapsing in Europe-boy theses guys are sharp!)  has accounted for fully half of the job deficit vs. long term trend since 2007.  In other words: because of 'reform' and 'change' we never get back to even where we were before all these lightbringers dumped their Goddamn mercury tainted CFL quality of light pollution on the rest of us.

And to the chagrin of left shanking duffers everywhere, the Club Rules committee (aka CBO) agrees. It seems that incentives matter after all-even when indulging in prog salvationist fantasies. Golly.

So we were told that O'care would save the average family $2,500 by now, instead it's costing them $2 grand. We were told that O'care would bring salvation to the trembling,  oppressed 30 million-plus uninsured, now CBO projects that ten years after O'care  passage the US will have....30 million-plus uninsured - but now they're unemployed too.  And we were told by clouds of left leaning economists how raising the cost of employment while reducing the post mandate after tax yield of work would increase employment, instead it's knocked employment onto a whole new trend line.

And since we are now going to work like Belgians I guess we need to learn how to live like poor, soggy, depressed Walloons.  Brussels sprouts anyone?

I'd say 'attaboy Barry' except that it takes an entire Federal village and press corps full of idiots to make the classic Euroweenie blunder 30 years after the Euros perfected it.

It's as if they threw away their Big Berthas and Pings in favor of some old, busted Scottish mashies and niblicks expecting to knock five strokes off their game.

And these cats are the club Champions?

Cultural map of the world - very cool

0valuemap.gif

Envy trumps prosperity.

We are a social species who benchmark against each other.  Is it any surprise that politicians would use our Green Eyed Monster to one eye snake us out of our money and freedoms?

Shakespeare's Othello is alive and well in Everyman. Whether it's resentment of rich Philistines or  supercilious bien pensants we all have him clinging to our back. The problem is that every time we take counsel of our envy we end up empowering the oppressive central state. And power is far, far, more unequally distributed than money.  Yet we further concentrate power in a vain attempt to 'get' the rich who short of murder,  can't be "got".

And of course concentrated power is readily convertible into great wealth.  Just ask the Clintons.  Or Putins. Or Blairs. Or Mugabes. Or the Hu Jintaos.  Or any of their tens of thousands of functionaries. Different 'traditions' regulate the 'conversion' in different cultures but the basic process hasn't changed since the first warlord galloped off the Steppes: I can help you or hurt you, the choice is yours. And if you pay I can be rich....and I'll let you live.

Democracy was supposed to change all that but it simply changed who got to play warlord: the rhetorically violent and procedurally adept replaced the physically violent and militarily adept.

Or as my doctor is wont to say:  "from below all the assholes look the same".

Matt Ridley at the link.

What does it signify that my smartphone is as capable as a plutocrat's personal secretary in 1980?

From Matt Ridley

Man not charged for killing cop who busted into his house at sawn on a no knock raid

The police chief who approved the raid should be fired and stripped of his pension. In 1983 we had 3000 paramilitary assaults on Americans.  Last year there were over 50000.

We don't live in a democracy, we live in a badged thugocracy.  Just one more way the war on drugs is tearing us apart.

How can Obama know that there is no corruption or crime in the IRS Tea Party Scandal before the investigation is complete?

Well there are two truths: regular truth and revolutionary truth.  It is important to el Maximum Lider that there be no crime so this is a revolutionary truth.

$3.5 million

What it would have cost in 1992 to dupicate the functionality of an iphone.  As I've said before - what a bloody magnificent country we live in.

15 second s to stopping bleeding from gunshots - utterly cool

Where else does innovation after innovation pour forth?  Nowhere even close to the United States. What magnificent bloody country.  Well except for the Federal Stupor State.  Our private society deserves better governments.  It rocks, they suck.

When you claim there is no crime before the investigation by a major campaign supporter is over it's a coverup

Particularly when the main IRS exec in the case - also a big Obama supporter - has taken the Fifth.  Now why would an innocent woman do that?

Probably for the same reason the top two IRS officials visited the White House a combined 350 times in Obama's first term. The stench of corruption is so strong it brings tears to the eyes.

Hey, it's the Chicago way.

DEA bozo #2 finally trapped into admitting weed is less dangerous than booze.

His boss still refuses to tell the truth.  Because drug enforcement is all about lying and exercising power over others. Legalize and decriminalize and these cats have to get real jobs that contribute to society rather than tearing it down.

What a concept.

What is a bipartisan CBO worth?

About 6.2 trillion dollars and 1.6 million jobs.

Back when O'care was being considered the CBO provided the definitive "scoring" of the bill.  Unfortunately the Dems had complete control of Congress and therefore the CBO. That meant that CBO had to use Dem assumptions which in some cases were tantamount to accounting fraud.  For example the CBO was told to include ten years of revenue and only six years of costs in the scoring.  The result: an estimate of ten year cost of 1 trillion when the real number was 2.6 which the newly bipartisn CBO acknowledges and the lifetime number was 7.2 trillion. Likewise back then it estimated 800,000 in job losses due to O'care, now bipartisan CBO estimates 2.4 million fewer jobs.

And of course the drunk and pocketed press swallowed the numbers without even blinking.

For the life of me I cannot figure out how the Federal govt is going to get out of the coming fiscal and regulatory cataclysm.  The Press is heavily left partisan, the bureaucracy is heavily left partisan and on average half of the political class are left partisan.  There isn't enough non Dem infrastructure at the Federal level to truly do  bipartisan reform.

3 inches of snow and the public library closes early, McDonalds - wide open

Why is it that 'greedy' private businesses stay open and consistently deliver service day after day while the 'public servants' shut down for every holiday, offer lousy weekend hours and vanish at the slightest bad weather?

How can we get more avarice and greed into our so-called 'public services'?  So we can get decent quality and service like in private businesses?

Random pricing not correlated with quality strong sign of a broken market

In functioning markets quality, service and features tend to vary positively with price.  First class costs more but you get free drinks, dinner and someone treats you well.  One condition where this truism doesn't hold is when there are major market discontinuities:  personal computers were cheaper and more useful than the prior version, Walmart integrated a whole host of distribution, order management and procurement innovations to wipe out a whole category of small town and rural retailers while giving more for less.

The other common scenario where price fails to correlate positively with the value elements is market failure - an industry where price are is not well connected to the underlying economics of the business.  Either buyers don't respond to price signals rationally or sellers don't behave in a profit maximizing manner.  This happens most often when third parties like the government get in the middle of market transactions, disconnecting price from consumption, like it does in education or in this case health services.  From the American Interest:

Pay more, get the same—or less. A new study in Health Affairs finds that health care, unlike practically every other sector of our economy, is the one area where price and quality are totally uncorrelated. According to the WSJ, the study authors paired newly released data on hospital prices with quality metrics. The result throws the dysfunction of our system into sharp relief:
However, more qualitative, albeit rudimentary data, did not show expensive hospitals excelling. They performed worse than low-priced hospitals in keeping patients from being readmitted within a month and for avoiding blood clots and death in surgical patients. They also did no better in keeping heart attack and pneumonia patients alive than did low-price hospitals, although they were more successful in averting death for heart failure patients. Their overall ratings among patients were not significantly different than low-price hospitals.
Our healthcare system has been shaped by governments that have worked to create healthcare delivery cartels composed of two or three broad spectrum regional health caresystems in most metropolitan areas. It's as if WalMart and Target lwere different companies in each metro region and owned all the various retail and retail related categories: one owns Lowes, the other Exxon gas retailing down to the smallest boutique . That's how healthcare is operated and it's been the active policy of government to promote this cartelized conglomeration. And it's insame - there are no scale economies, no experience curves, no process optimization when you organize across a market sector rather than deeply within the sector segments. What do the Oklahoma City region Walmarts know about car dealerships? or the Chicago area Targets about dry cleaning? But of course the healthcare systems or more accurately, cartels were not created to drive cost down or quality up but to increase negotiating power relative to the payers - private insurers, state governments and the Feds. And they do so by eliminating competition and dominating a particular region.

This anti-competitive behavior is why often the most expensive (read most powerful) cartels have lousy quality.  A good example is South Texas where a single cartel controls most delivery in a very geographically isolated area - lousy quality, stunningly high prices all in the lowest income market in America.  The exception to this rule are independents like the Cleveland Clinic, Mayo, or MD Anderson that compete on a nation-wide basis - they can only attract patients and get reimbursement if they focus on efficiency and innovation and deliver more for less.  And as a result, they do.

The Obami are making this rotten system worse by giving higher reimbursements to doctors that are employed by the cartels than they pay to independent physician groups and by requiring physician groups to make major investments in software that has no value for them but facilitates cartel control.  This medical corporatism, when combined with the anticipated increases in health demand driven by higher enrollments and forcing people to buy more feature rich 'prepaid health plans' is a recipe for accelerating healthcare inflation.

What's even worse is that the cartels are ultimately controlled by physicians, who are the true victorsof 20 years of 'healthcare reform' - the NFP hospitals and facilities of the 'Systems' have become nothing more than financial conduits s for the further enrichment of the world's richest physician guild.  Who because they will now be employees rather than independent businessmen will (based upon experience) work 10-30% less, seeing fewer patients, delivering fewer procedures and making a serious doctor shortage even worse.

Funny how corporatist rigging of markets results in the most powerful corporatist entities getting richer.  But that was always the plan - carving up the rackets so all the power players win is the Chicago way.

And the people?  Tough.

Why are corporate margins continuing to widen even as demand sinks.

Widening margins in the face of stagnant demand signify several things:
  1. Increasing productivity due to improved automation and practices - which is definitely going on
  2. Decreasing competition due to industry consolidation taking players out of the market - this could be happening in certain markets, consolidation could also be driving scale economics
  3. Decreasing competition due to new entrants not entering the market - this is definitely true, new business creation is at a very low ebb
  4. A lack of innovation which leads to less competition and therefore fatter margins - I'm not sure about this one
  5. A lack of innovation/investment which leads to lower costs, both expense and depreciation - I don't think this is true
  6. Lower financing costs - with ZIRP this is definitely true
Overall I think part of what is going on is the continuing fruits of the information revolution exploding consumption in things like bandwidth combined with lower innovation and starts driven by pessimism about the future governance of the nation and an increase in consolidation and oligopoly driven by the Federal Government's preference for Corporatist economic policy.

It's a witches brew of bad portents for the future.  And it stinks.

"Parallel Construction" How the NSA launders 'confidential' information through other agencies like the DEA

In the real world it's called criminal fraud.  But so much of our Federal State would be criminal if not for its sovereign state exemption.  Our 'servants' abuse us and dishonor the nation that the purportedly serve.  Despicable once again.

SPYING: Parallel Construction Revealed: How The DEA Is Trained To Launder Classified Surveillance Info.
Last summer, Reuters revealed how the NSA and other surveillance organizations would share info with the DEA and other law enforcement agencies, but then tell them to reconstruct the evidence via a process called “parallel construction,” so that the surveillance would not then be discussed in court. This is highly questionable, and probably illegal, as a defendant has the right to know all of the evidence being used against him or her, and should also be told how that evidence was gathered, to make sure the collection was legal. But what’s being done with parallel construction, is that the intelligence community is able to give “hints” to law enforcement, allowing them to come up with various pretenses for an investigation, avoiding ever having to reveal that the NSA or others used potentially illegal surveillance efforts. One example given in that Reuters report was how DEA agents would suddenly be given a tip like this: “Be at a certain truck stop at a certain time and look for a certain vehicle.” The DEA would then have the local police come up with some pretense to stop the truck… and then when evidence is found they can claim it was a random traffic stop, when the reality is anything but that.
After the Reuters report, C.J. Ciaramella used Muckrock to request all DEA training material and official policies concerning “parallel construction” and recently received nearly 300 pages of documents, much of it redacted, but still which reveals that this is common practice at the DEA and widely known.
So if you’re on a jury, you should know that the DEA has spent a lot of time planning how to lie to you, and resolve any doubts with that in mind.  Frankly, I don't know how anyone on a jury could vote to convict on any DEA charge.  On every level:  legal, moral, spiritual they are profoundly and completely corrupt.  They stand for nothing but oppression and cruelty.

Redistribute power not money

The problem with 'fighting' income inequality or any other form of inequality via the Feds is that regardless of whether a policy works or not it results in even more power concentrating in DC and the organized rent seekers.  Jay Cost has an interesting historical take on this that includes Andy Jackson and William Jennings Bryant

One way to reduce healthcare costs is to bust the AMA aka the doctor's cartel

Nurse practitioners and physicians assistants could probably professionally handle half of all primary care encounters.  But then docs would have to settle for a C class Mercedes and we can't have that.

One of the enduring mysteries of O'care was how the enlightened ones were going to reduce costs be gunning demand in a totally cartelized market without taking a single concrete step to bust the cartels.  It's almost as if they didn't really care so long as they got control and got to carve up the rackets for themselves.

More evidence that the Federal Stupor State is bad fir your health.

Recent studies confirm that Federal dietary guidelines are wrong: low carb not high carb yields healthier outcomes. Of course the original guidelines were driven by Sen McGovern's staff and their author admits their was no science behind it.

The glorious stupor state must lead and it matters not to where we go so long as the central authoritarians call the shots.

Just one more way our bien pensants sneer at normal people

This article points out once again the subversive cultural attitudes of the elite. Do what you love is great if you're elite and have flexibility. But the concept is clearly contemptuous of normal everyday work. If DWYL is the driving principle then maids and other honorable low income work is crap.  And with our welfare state extending new and thicker tendrils in all directions it makes no sense for people at the bottom to work at crap jobs. Unless they love it.  No wonder our Lords are so desperate to expand immigration: their contempt for normal work is drying up the supply of little ones that enable them to "do what they love". And they hate that.

The inherent cultural contempt shown by the Boni for the society and norms that enable their wealth and status is surprising.  They seem to consider themselves our keepers rather than fellow citizens.  It's the Obama Hillary philosophy: shut up while we save you from yourselves.

A constitutional Republic cannot long endure such 'parental' treatment.

For we hold these truths to be self evident: that all men are not equal and some men are endowed by their educational pedigree to administer the little one's lives.  This is because those with high SATs are the wisest, kindest, bestest chaps of all.

Prosecuting state and local politics as felonies

Another way the superstate is crushing the liberty and hope out of the nation.  Harvey Silverglate has an important book about the astounding level of prosecutorial abuse and corruption at the Federal level.  They really aren't on your side.  They're 'the other'.  Fear them.

In Cuba fathers prauy their daughters grow up pretty so that they can be hookers

That's what collectivism does:  reduces everyone to the status of whore.  Remember that next time that you see a bien pensant doing totalitourism.  I would recommend you read the introductory chapter to this book here. Here's an excerpt (Jinetera is a euphemism for whore):

‘Everyone is jinetera,’ said Luis. ‘Look around. Everyone. Jinetero, jinetera. Look what Fidel has done to our country. Look what he has done to our people.’ We were sitting on the Malecón – the wall which runs along the Havana sea front – watching good-looking jineteros and jineteras attempting to snare a tourist. Of all the Latin American countries I visited, I found I had the most intense conversations in Cuba. This was one of them. I transcribed it into my diary later that night. ‘I don’t want my children to be a doctor like their mother, or a political economist like me. What is the point? MD, PhD, a month’s work and I cannot buy a pair of shoes.’ Luis continued: ‘Useless life. A much better life for my son is if he is a taxi driver or a waiter. Then he can get dollars. Maybe he can get a tourist to fall in love with him. And my daughters? I tell you a secret. I pray my daughters will be beautiful. Every father does. So they can have tourist boyfriends, have money, maybe marry a tourist, and get out of here. That is why every Cuban father wants his daughter to be a jinetera. Jinetera – that is the best life you can have here, that is how you survive, that is how you escape. Thank you, Fidel!’

Ladderization and those pesky Danes - why income mobility in the US is much more impressive than it appears to be.

Research by a team from Harvard and Berkeley has just been released that finds US income mobility has remained 'constant' over the past 50 years, albeit at a lower level of mobility than that of others such as the Nordic or Germanic nations.  And it's a good piece of research as far as it goes but you can be easily misled by the type of league tables that this data encourages.  Because as Ron Bailey of Reason points out: mobility is like climbing a five rung ladder.  It makes a huge difference how far the ladder rungs are apart - if for example, the five quintiles are separated by $1,000 each as in $20, 21, 22, 23, 24K then income mobility is high because it's trivial.  Simply putting in some OT will vault you from the bottom to the top.  But if it's $20,000 between as in $20, 40, 60, 80, 100k then moving from bottom to top will be harder but it will also be meaningful - your life will differ in ways that moving from the bottom to the top or back again won't be in the 1K world.

And lo and behold if that isn't what is happening in the US versus the European income mobility 'good boys'.  Unfortunately we don't have perfectly comparable data, but I think Bailey's approximations and conclusions hold up very well.  From Bailey's piece:

Below is a table using 2011 Eurostat post-tax income data converted from current Euros to current dollars. I could find no U.S. income data that provided post-tax quintile thresholds so I have included 2011 pre-tax quintile thresholds on the top row and 2010 average post-tax income data in the second row. The starred figures are average post-tax U.S. incomes for households between the 96th and 99th percentiles and the top one percent respectively. Comparing these data give a rough idea of how U.S. income quintiles compare with those of other wealthy countries.
Quintiles1st2nd3rd4th95%99%
U.S. cutoffs before tax$20,000$38,000$62,000$102,000$186,000   $368,000
U.S. average after tax 2010$24,000$41,000$58,000  $81,000$215,000*$1,013,000*
Denmark$25,000$32,000$40,000  $50,000  $72,000   $115,000
Germany$17,000$23,000$29,000  $50,000  $57,000     $86,000
France$19,000$24,000$31,000  $41,000  $68,000   $123,000
Sweden$21,000$28,000$34,000  $42,000  $58,000     $82,000

One way to think of the comparison between the U.S. and Denmark is that, in absolute terms, it takes only an increase in income of $47,000 for a Danish household to rise from the bottom quintile to that country’s top five percent.  A comparable rise in the United States would mean that a household’s income has increased by $166,000 to cross the pre-tax threshold or $190,000 to achieve the average post-tax income of Americans who are between the 96th and 99th percentile of incomes. In some sense, it’s easier to appear “mobile” when you have a lot less distance to travel.
Another way to think about comparing the U.S. and Denmark is that with an increase of $47,000 an American household would rise from the bottom quintile to the middle quintile of the U.S. income distribution. In other words, a solidly middle class American income is comparable to an income that would put a Danish household in its country’s top five percent of households.
The Harvard and Berkeley researchers observed, “Scandinavian economies have much greater relative intergenerational mobility than the United States.” But they added that that “does not necessarily mean that children from low-income families in Denmark do better than those in the U.S. in absolute terms.”
That is true. One oft-cited statistic is that 16 percent of Danes born into households in the bottom quintile rise to the top quintile in their country—an income journey of $25,000 dollars.  Whereas only eight percent of similarly poor Americans make to the top quintile in the U.S., an income journey of $82,000.
However, a study by economists at the U.S. Treasury Department published in the May, 2013 American Economic Review reported that 27 percent of American teenagers who were living in households with incomes in the bottom quintile in 1987 were now in households with incomes above $62,000 (fourth and fifth quintiles) by 2007. In other words, in terms of absolute income gains, poor Americans were almost twice as likely as poor Danes to make incomes found in the top Danish income quintile.  The rungs of the income ladder are further apart in the U.S., but successfully climbing each one takes an American a lot farther than a Dane or a German ascending his country’s income rungs.

Inequality is often measured by the Gini coefficient in which a score of 0 indicates perfect income equality and a score of 1 means that one household gets all the income. In December, the Pew Research Center published data showing how the pre-and-post redistribution Gini coefficients of various rich countries stacked up. Below is a table with selected values.
Gini CoefficientPre-redistributionPost-redistribution
U.S.0.4990.380
Denmark0.4290.252
Germany0.4920.286
France0.5050.303
Sweden0.4410.269

Taking from the rich to give to the poor clearly shrinks the distance between income rungs. In his State of the Union address, President Obama declared, “Opportunity is who we are.” Yes, but it’s hard to see how shortening the income ladder provides more opportunity for income mobility. It just makes everyone equally less well off.
And all of this is concluded before taking into account that the US is a continental scale empire whose wide variation in regional cost of living makes the national PPP statistics ridiculously inaccurate for this type of analysis because high and low incomes are not evenly distributed across the nation.  Typically 'high' incomes are presented as too high because they face far greater than typical cost of living and 'very low' incomes are in places that have very low costs and are therefore underestimated on a national basis.  This is much more prevalent in a large, diverse, continental scale nation like the US than in Denmark which is about the physical and population scale of Metro Houston and where the top 20 surnames constitute 37% of the population while in the US they constitute less than 7.5%.

Inequality is simply a measure of diversity.  Period.  Want less inequality, get less diverse.  Or if you're a lefty, scream for more diversity, more immigration and so on and then scream about the inevitable consequences of more diversity, more immigration and so on.  It's a sweet gig so long as you have the press passed out drunk in your pocket. Which admittedly isn't hard to do because the average 'serious' 'mainstream' 'hard hitting' 'journalist' appears to be a sweet young ingenue from Vassar or Wellesley. I mean Ben Rhodes told us all about it when he ran the Iran scam.

As a reference, here is the 'league' table for mean disposable household income overall:

The Weaponisation of the Federal Government.

The government has been used by the executive to punish their enemies before.  Wilson, FDR, LBJ were particularly adept and Nixon bless his heart was both inept and of the wrong party persuasion to get away with the skulduggery - the IRS turned him down cold.  But the Federales were a lot less invasive and powerful back then.  Today they have virtually unlimited access to our private conversations and power to crush any one of us for essentially any reason.  The Dinesh D'Souza persecution - issuing a felony indictment to a strident and effective critic of the President's for a low level campaign finance violation when it has always been a misdemeanor in the past and when your campaign got away with much larger and more egregious violations is an example of what happens when the executive believes it is beyond the law.  And when a politicized press corps won't report what's happening.

Tom Basile outlines the many ways that the Obami have weaponised the government  to punish their enemies.  You remember when Barack Obama said he was going to punish his enemies donn't you?  Very Chicago but not very American.  Yes they can.

Massive levels of long term unemployment are a feature not a bug of Social Democracy.

State long term jobless percentages have never, ever been higher for most states or the nation as a whole.  USA today story here.  States like blue dynamo New Jersey have more than half of their unemployed as long term unemployed.  So add that to the butcher's bill:

  • 96 million able bodied adults not working - almost one third of the human beings in country.
  • Welfare dependency at all time highs.
  • Labor force participation by men has never been lower in the nation's history.  Never. Ever.

Homogeneous northern European or Japanese nations can cope with all of this statist manipulation and rent seeking, albeit at a much lower levels of productivity than we have.  Australia, who among major countries is closest to us has mean household disposable income of  $36,000 vs. our $50,000 despite weathering the recession in much better shape.  Only Switzerland, at $44,000 even clears $40,000.  Even with very favorable demographics (older, northern european or east asian populations).  And none of them do any meaningful innovation at all, whether technological, economic or social they are dragged along (and defended) by us.  Pathetically parasitic.

But we want so desperately to be like them.  What is wrong with our entitled elites?  Is the power to manipulate your fellows and the approbation of foreign authoritarians so important that you'd sell your soul for this obscene mess of  pottage even as it collapses the world over?

But our lords squeal Gini! Gini! Gini! to try and divert us from the human catastrophe blooming in our midst.
