Sports fields are surprisingly tuned to the sport's underlying physics

This chart actually surprises me.  I simply assumed that sports rules and playing fields were arbitrary anachronisms.  But it turns out that there is a strong correlation between field size and physics.  The two sports where there isn't:  jai alai and squash are designed around the smallness of the court relative to physics so they really are the exceptions that prove the rule.  Hattip Marginalrevolution.com
