Greg Easterbrook with a masterful review of the literature on SETI, the origins of life and whether or not we really want any extra terrestrials to find us. Of course judging from recent rhetoric, I am beginning to wonder whether there's any intelligent life down here.

Addenda: I note now that this is from 1988. Some of the things he talks about (no planets around other stars) have now been superseded by new facts. But all in all a good article.
